The PC-4000 is the cylinder-shaped member of the SVS 4000 series, announced on 29 November 2017 together with the rectangular SB-4000 sealed and PB-4000 ported models and on sale from 15 December 2017 at USD 1,799.99. SVS said the 4000 series borrowed heavily from its 16-Ultra range, with changes to driver, amplifier, cabinet and controls. SVS describes the cylinder cabinet as a design that no other brand offers. The PC-4000 is now discontinued, and the last units were sold through the company outlet at USD 1,699.99 under a five-year unconditional warranty.
Key specs that matter
A down-firing 13.5 inch driver sits at the base of an upright MDF cylinder 1194 mm tall and 422 mm in diameter, which occupies a round footprint of about 41 cm on the floor. The unit weighs 41.9 kg. Power comes from the Sledge STA-1200D, a Class D amplifier with discrete MOSFET outputs rated at 1,200 W RMS and more than 4,000 W peak. Three 3.5 inch ports load the enclosure. Response within 3 dB reaches 17 Hz to 200 Hz in Standard mode, 15 Hz in Extended mode and 16 Hz in Sealed mode. SVS quotes a maximum of 133.1 dB at 32 Hz, measured at 1 m in one-eighth space. Connections are stereo XLR and RCA inputs and outputs, a 3 to 12 V AC or DC trigger and an Auto/On switch.
Engineering and use context
The 4000 series driver is an underhung design with 53 mm of Xmax and 91.6 mm of Xmech, so the voice coil stays inside a uniform magnetic field across its linear stroke. The coil is 3 inches across, edge-wound from eight layers of flat aluminium wire, and two large toroidal ferrite magnets form the motor, which accounts for about 20 kg of the 22.5 kg driver. A cast aluminium basket optimised with FEA holds a reinforced, vented paper-composite cone with a laminated glass-fibre dust cap. Standing the cabinet on end gives it the internal volume needed for porting while using less floor space than a box of the same capacity. A 50 MHz Analog Devices DSP with double-precision 56-bit filtering handles the three port tunings together with low-pass, phase, polarity, room gain and three parametric EQ bands, all reachable from a Bluetooth app for iOS and Android that stores three user presets. A front display with Intelligent Feature Control uses a blue 8-digit LED that can be dimmed or turned off. The top cap is piano gloss black, a steel mesh grille guards the driver, and the SoundPath Subwoofer Isolation System is included to decouple the cabinet from the floor.
Pairing
The balanced XLR input suits AV processors and preamplifiers with XLR subwoofer outputs, and the line outputs feed a second cylinder, an arrangement SVS sold as a Dual PC-4000 pack.
Alternatives
The SVS PB-4000 is the rectangular ported-box model of the same 4000 series.
