The Radius 380 is a small active subwoofer in the third-generation Radius Series from Monitor Audio, introduced in 2013. It was priced at USD 875 or GBP 678.50 and combines an active 8-inch driver and an equally sized passive radiator in a cabinet about 300 mm on each side, as the bass unit for the compact Radius speakers and other small systems.
Key specs that matter
Two side-firing 8-inch (200 mm) C-CAM drivers are used, one active and one passive, and the active unit runs from a Class D amplifier fed by a switch-mode supply. The owner's manual rates the amplifier at 140 W at below 1% THD plus noise, while other listings give 200 W. The lower limit is 30 Hz at -6 dB, and the low-pass filter covers 40 to 120 Hz with a 24 dB per octave slope. Inputs are stereo and LFE RCA sockets with more than 20 kohm impedance and a line-level sensitivity above 3.5 mV, plus a 12 V trigger. Power draw is below 0.5 W in standby, below 10 W at idle and up to 200 W maximum. The manual gives the size as 308 x 290 x 305 mm, and the unit weighs 10.16 kg, while other listings give the depth as 345 mm. Finishes include gloss black and satin white.
Engineering and use context
The passive radiator, called an ABR by Monitor Audio, has no magnet or voice coil and is driven by pressure changes in the enclosure, replacing a port for bass extension without port noise. Both drivers face sideways, so neither cone points at the listener. The cones are made of C-CAM, which Monitor Audio uses across its ranges. Three EQ presets, Music, Movie and Impact, change the tuning for different content. Phase switches between 0 and 180 degrees, and power operates in On, Auto or trigger mode. The cabinet is 18 mm MDF with internal bracing. With stereo inputs as well as an LFE input, the Radius 380 can be used in a two-channel system and in a home cinema without changing connections.
Pairing
The adjustable low-pass filter suits small satellite speakers such as the Radius series as well as bookshelf models whose bass ends between those frequencies. The trigger input or Auto mode switches the subwoofer with the system. Its size lets it sit beside a sofa in rooms of about 20 m2, and its modest weight makes it easy to move while finding a spot for it.
Alternatives
The Monitor Audio Radius 390 is the larger Radius subwoofer, pairing a 10-inch driver with a 10-inch passive radiator and weighing 13.76 kg.
