The Anthra W12 is the middle model of the Anthra subwoofer series from Monitor Audio, positioned between the W10 and the larger W15. It is a sealed-box design built around a single 12-inch driver and a high-output Class-D amplifier, with setup handled by an on-board display and the MaestroUnite app. Monitor Audio lists it at USD 3,299 in the United States, and a UK price of GBP 1,900 was quoted at launch, with a 5-year warranty.
Key specs that matter
The 305 mm driver has an aluminium cone with a dimpled ceramic coating, which Monitor Audio calls RST II C-CAM, mounted on a high linear-excursion triple suspension that allows 50 mm of peak-to-peak travel. On 240 V mains the amplifier is rated at 1,700 W instantaneous and 900 W continuous short-term, falling to 1,325 W and 700 W on 120 V. The lower limit is 16 Hz at -6 dB, while the top end extends to 400 Hz at -6 dB when the low-pass stage is bypassed. The cube measures 374 mm on each side without feet and weighs 28.56 kg. Buyers choose between Satin White and High Gloss Black cabinets.
Engineering and use context
Its enclosure uses 25 mm MDF with a thicker 36 mm front baffle and is braced internally, and because it is sealed there are no ports or passive radiators to place around. Large motor assemblies drive the cone. A 28-bit, 50 MIPS DSP runs the filtering - the low-pass point can be set between 20 and 200 Hz with slopes from -3 to -48 dB per octave, and phase is variable from 0 to 360 degrees. Three stored curves (music, movies and impact) sit alongside three user curves, each with up to eight bands of peaking, shelf and high-pass filters. A full-colour LCD and a rotary dial on the rear panel cover basic setup and preset selection, while the app gives access to the full DSP menu and to multi-sub configuration. The mains input accepts 85 to 265 V, and a magnetic grille covers the driver. Rubber feet or spikes can be fitted under the cabinet.
Pairing
Inputs are stereo RCA plus balanced XLR for a mono or LFE feed, with matching RCA and XLR through connections for daisy-chaining. There is no speaker-level input, so the W12 needs a preamplifier, integrated amplifier or AV receiver with a line-level subwoofer or pre-out connection. Up to three further Anthra subwoofers can be linked to it for multi-sub installations in medium and large rooms, an arrangement that works for film playback and for two-channel systems with large main speakers.
Alternatives
The Anthra W10 is the compact sibling, using a 10-inch driver and a 500 W amplifier in a 321 mm cube weighing 20.06 kg.
