The Performance 9 is the active subwoofer of the Performance series from the British loudspeaker company Mordaunt-Short, listed from 2005 alongside the Performance 2, Performance 5 and Performance 6 speakers. It is built as a cube and was produced in high gloss metallic silver and in black. A remote control was part of the package, as were grilles for the driver openings.
Key specs that matter
Two 10 inch (25 cm) long-throw drivers with alloy cones do the work. Each is driven by its own 500 W ICEpower module, giving a combined amplifier output of 1000 W, while maximum power draw from the wall is stated as 1200 W. Rated frequency response runs from 14 Hz to 200 Hz. The cabinet measures 500 mm on every side, and the unit weighs about 40 kg.
Engineering and use context
Mordaunt-Short mounts the woofer pair back to back in an opposed arrangement, fixed to a rigid internal steel frame inside a ported enclosure. Because they move in opposition, the reactive forces of one cone cancel those of the other, so the cabinet is not pushed back and forth by the drivers. ICEpower modules are switching amplifiers that turn the supply on and off 400,000 times per second, which cuts heat loss and raises efficiency compared with a linear output stage of similar rating. The power switch has three positions, and in the middle auto position the subwoofer turns itself on and off as the input requires, with a status LED changing between green and red. A red warning LED lights when the overload protection circuits intervene. Supplied feet screw into the base, with metal spikes for carpet and rubber feet for hard floors, each locked in place by a locknut.
Pairing
Left and right RCA line inputs take the pre-amp outputs of a two-channel amplifier. In that mode the built-in upper frequency control and a roll-off slope switch are active, and the slope can be set to 24 dB per octave for ported main speakers or 12 dB per octave for sealed ones. A separate mono LFE input accepts the LFE or Sub feed from a surround receiver, and then the receiver sets the crossover while the internal filter is bypassed. An input selector chooses between the two, so a hi-fi system and a home cinema can stay connected at once. Matching Line Out and LFE Out sockets copy each input for a second subwoofer. Volume and a 0 or 180 degree phase switch complete the rear panel.
Alternatives
The Mordaunt-Short Mezzo 9 is the subwoofer of the Mezzo range, fitted with a pair of 8 inch woofers and a DSP engine.
