The Aviano 9 is a powered subwoofer from Mordaunt-Short, the British loudspeaker maker established in 1967, and it appeared around 2009 as part of the Aviano family. That family was pitched between the entry-level Carnival models and the higher Mezzo series, and it combined the Aviano 1 bookshelf, the Aviano 5 centre and the Aviano 8 floorstander with two active subwoofers, of which this is the larger one.

Key specs that matter

One 305 mm long-throw woofer carries the whole output, and it is fed by a 300 W digital amplifier housed in the same enclosure. The active low-pass crossover can be moved anywhere from 50 Hz up to 200 Hz. Mordaunt-Short quotes a response of 35 Hz to 22 kHz, and since the upper number lies far above the crossover ceiling, the band actually reproduced in a system is set by that low-pass control. The box is 360 mm wide, 471 mm tall and 508 mm deep, so it is deeper than it is wide and needs clear floor space behind it.

Engineering and use context

Aviano speakers use the company's CPC aluminium cone technology, the same Continuous Profile Cone idea found in the Mezzo line, and the 12-inch unit here has an aluminium diaphragm rather than paper or polypropylene. Its long-throw suspension is built for large cone travel, and Mordaunt-Short specifies its amplifier stage as a digital type rather than a linear one. Controls include a Frequency control for the crossover point and a Phase control on which the 0 position is the normal setting, which helps the woofer line up in time with main speakers that stand closer to or further from the seat. Finish options across the Aviano range were black, dark walnut and rosewood.

Pairing

The natural partners are the other Aviano models, which share 1-inch aluminium dome tweeters and dual binding posts for bi-wiring. The compact Aviano 1, with its 5.25-inch aluminium woofer, measured -3 dB at 67 Hz and -6 dB at 57 Hz, so a crossover set a little above those points lets the Aviano 9 take over the lowest octave in a 5.1 layout built around small satellites. With an AV receiver, the subwoofer output of the receiver handles bass management and the sub simply follows it.

Alternatives

The smaller Mordaunt-Short Aviano 7 uses a 10-inch aluminium driver with a 175 W Class D amplifier in a 423 x 305 x 361 mm cabinet.
