The PB-2000 Pro is a ported powered subwoofer from SVS, part of the 2000 Pro series that replaced the company's original 2000 models. It carries over technology from SVS's larger 16-Ultra, 4000 and 3000 series into a mid-sized cabinet, pairing a newly designed 12-inch driver with the Sledge STA-550D amplifier, and it is intended for both home cinemas and music systems.

The PB-2000 Pro uses one 12-inch high-excursion driver in a dual-ported cabinet, powered by the Sledge STA-550D Class D amplifier rated at 550W RMS and more than 1,500W peak. Frequency response is 16Hz to 290Hz (+/-3dB) in standard ported mode. Signal processing runs on a 50MHz Analog Devices audio DSP with 56-bit filtering. The cabinet measures 53.2 x 44 x 60cm and weighs 29.4kg, in Premium Black Ash.

Engineering and use context

The driver was redesigned for the 2000 Pro series. Its aluminium cone is vented and fitted with a composite-fibre dust cap, giving high stiffness for its mass so the cone moves as a piston at large excursions. The injection-moulded parabolic surround allows very long throw, and a dual-ferrite motor weighing over 15 pounds (about 7kg) keeps control of that movement. A dual-layer voice coil improves linearity at full excursion and reduces power compression, while an aluminium pole-piece extension draws heat away from the coil. The Sledge amplifier combines Class D efficiency with fully discrete MOSFET output devices rated at 25A and 600V, allowing it to deliver large currents on demand. The DSP applies response curves designed for this cabinet. Variable port tuning is built in - with both ports open, the subwoofer runs in ported mode for maximum output, while inserting the supplied foam plugs converts it to sealed operation with a 17Hz extension and a gentler roll-off. The MDF cabinet has an extra-thick front baffle, extensive internal bracing and acoustic insulation to prevent resonance. A smartphone app for Apple, Android and Amazon devices controls level, crossover and phase from the listening position.

Pairing

The PB-2000 Pro connects to the LFE output of an AV receiver or processor, or to stereo preamplifier outputs, and SVS's SoundPath wireless adapter removes the need for a long cable. The PB-2000 Pro is sized for medium to large rooms, and ported mode gives the most deep-bass output for home cinema.
