The Gravis VI is a twin-driver subwoofer from the Sonus faber Gravis line, priced at USD 8,250, three times the price of the Gravis III. It is aimed at large music systems and home cinemas, and it combines two drivers with the same app control used on the Gravis III, plus compatibility with the Gravis Transmitter for wireless connection.
Key specs that matter
Two 320 mm long-throw drivers with sandwich honeycomb cones of fibreglass and Nomex are mounted in a sealed cabinet. Amplification is Class AB, at 1,700 W RMS and 2,400 W peak. Frequency response reaches down to 18 Hz at -6 dB. Inputs are two RCA, two XLR and a Speakon high-level connection, so two separate sources can be connected in balanced or unbalanced form. The enclosure is 616 mm high, 448 mm wide and 585 mm deep and weighs 52 kg. The body is covered in leather, and the top is lacquered wood in Red, Wenge or Black.
Engineering and use context
Each cone is built as a sandwich, with fibreglass skins over a Nomex honeycomb core, which keeps the diaphragm stiff and light at the excursion levels needed below 20 Hz. With two drivers, the cone area is twice that of a single unit of the same size, and the work is spread over two motors. Being sealed, the cabinet has a gradual bass roll-off and no port. The app functions match those of the Gravis III, including presets, crossover adjustment, phase control over 360 degrees, parametric EQ and delay, and automatic power management. The Gravis Transmitter sends the signal wirelessly from the source to the subwoofer. Sonus faber keeps the Class AB topology for the entire collection.
Pairing
Two XLR and two RCA inputs allow a stereo preamplifier and an AV processor to feed the Gravis VI at the same time. With its deep extension, it suits large floorstanding speakers in rooms well over 20 m2 and home cinemas with a dedicated LFE channel. Where an amplifier lacks a sub output, its loudspeaker terminals can be wired to the Speakon socket. Weighing almost twice as much as the Gravis III, it needs two people to position.
Alternatives
The Sonus faber Gravis III is a smaller sealed model with a single 250 mm honeycomb cone, a 600 W RMS Class AB amplifier and a 25 Hz limit.
