The Gravis I is the smallest powered model of the Gravis subwoofer line from Sonus faber, first reported in September 2018 with an MSRP of USD 999. It is the entry point to the Italian company's subwoofer range, and its finishes follow the woods and lacquers of those ranges, with a leather-covered top.

Key specs that matter

A 210 mm (8-inch) treated paper cone with a wide rubber surround fires downward from a closed box. Its Class AB amplifier delivers 150 W RMS and 250 W peak. Frequency response starts at 30 Hz at -6 dB and extends up to the crossover setting, which is adjustable from 30 to 120 Hz with a 24 dB per octave slope. Controls include master volume, a separate LFE volume, a phase switch and an auto on/off function. For connections there are an LFE RCA socket, a line-level RCA input and a high-level Speakon connection. The enclosure measures 334 mm high, 286 mm wide and 316 mm deep and weighs 14 kg. Finishes are Walnut, Wenge, Matte White and Piano Black.

Engineering and use context

Because the driver fires toward the floor, the cone is hidden from view. The closed box has no port, and its low-frequency roll-off is gentler than that of a vented design of the same size. The wide rubber surround allows the paper cone the excursion it needs for deep bass from a small driver. Sonus faber uses a Class AB amplifier rather than a switching design. The high-level Speakon input takes a signal from the loudspeaker terminals of a stereo amplifier, which lets the Gravis I work with amplifiers that have no line-level sub output. Separate master and LFE volume controls allow different levels for stereo music through the line input and home cinema through the LFE input. There is no app, and every setting is changed with the controls on the back.

Pairing

The Gravis I suits compact stand-mounts such as the Lumina II or Concertino G4, which roll off above 50 Hz, with the crossover set close to their lower limit. Stereo systems without a subwoofer output use the Speakon high-level input, and AV receivers connect to the LFE socket. With its compact footprint, it fits beside a sideboard or next to a speaker stand, and the Walnut and Wenge versions sit alongside the wooden finishes of the Lumina and Sonetto ranges.

Alternatives

The Sonus faber Gravis II is the next model up, combining a 250 mm driver with a 250 mm passive radiator and a 400 W Class AB amplifier.
