The Gravis III is an active subwoofer from Sonus faber's Gravis collection, launched on 12 February 2020 at the ISE exhibition with a price of USD 2,750. It sits above the Gravis I and II, and unlike the Gravis I it is controlled by an app, with parametric equalisation and an optional wireless connection.

Key specs that matter

One long-throw 250 mm driver, its cone a honeycomb sandwich, works in a sealed enclosure. The Class AB amplifier delivers 600 W RMS and 900 W peak. Response extends down to 25 Hz with a fourth-order Linkwitz roll-off. The app provides four presets, a crossover from 40 to 150 Hz, phase from 0 to 360 degrees, parametric EQ, delay and auto power switching. Connections comprise RCA left, right and LFE, a balanced XLR input and a Speakon high-level connection, and an optional receiver adds a wireless link. The cabinet measures 415 x 400 x 495 mm and weighs 26.7 kg.

Engineering and use context

The honeycomb sandwich cone combines thin outer skins with a lightweight honeycomb core, which gives a stiff diaphragm that keeps its shape under the long strokes needed for deep bass. A sealed box, without a port, follows a fourth-order Linkwitz alignment, which describes the slope at which output falls below the lower limit. Continuous phase adjustment, instead of a simple 0 or 180 degree switch, and a delay setting are both available in the app. The four presets store complete setups, so the owner can switch between a music and a film configuration from the app. The body is covered in leather, with a Piano Black top as standard and Wenge or Walnut as alternatives. The optional wireless receiver removes the cable run between the sub and the preamplifier or receiver. Sonus faber chose Class AB amplification for this module, a design the company uses throughout the Gravis collection.

Pairing

The XLR input connects to a preamp or processor with a balanced subwoofer output, and the Speakon high-level input takes the speaker output of a stereo amplifier. The crossover range covers bookshelf models such as the Sonetto II G2 as well as floorstanders like the Lumina V. Given its weight and depth, the Gravis III needs a clear floor position in a medium or large room.
