The FTEQ-12 is the only model in the Reference FTEQ series from Proficient Audio and the one dual-driver design among the brand's freestanding subwoofers, which also include the Signature FRS and Protege FDS ranges. Two 12 inch drivers work in a force-cancelling layout, each with its own amplifier, and the cabinet is built for both music rooms and home theatre.
Key specs that matter
The woofers are high-excursion Kevlar cones with big-roll surrounds. Proficient quotes a response of 17 to 200 Hz within 3 dB, and amplification of 1,000 W x 2 peak from two mono block amplifiers, without a continuous figure. Its crossover spans 40 to 500 Hz. The enclosure is 488 x 460 x 450 mm and weighs 46.5 kg, and it is made from 25 mm MDF with a high-gloss piano black lacquer. A voltage selector covers 100 to 120 V and 220 to 240 V mains, and the warranty is two years.
Engineering and use context
With the two drivers mounted opposite each other, their reaction forces oppose and cancel, which Proficient says removes cabinet vibration. Driving each cone from a separate amplifier gives a bi-amplified layout. Most adjustment happens in the Sub Station smartphone app over Bluetooth Low Energy rather than on the rear panel. It offers volume, a crossover with selectable slope and a toggle to hand the filter over to an AV receiver, phase, a distance delay from 1.5 to 24 m, four bands of manual parametric EQ, Music and Movie presets and a night mode that compresses output. The signal-sensing standby timer can be set to 5, 10, 20 or 30 minutes or disabled. A 12 V trigger input, not offered on the FRS models, switches the amplifier on and off and overrides auto-sensing. A USB socket rated at 5 V and 500 mA powers the optional wireless receiver mounted on rear standoffs.
Pairing
Connections include left and right RCA low-level inputs with an LFE option, plus a balanced XLR input for long cable runs. Both the RCA and XLR sections have pass-through outputs, so several FTEQ-12 units or other powered speakers can be daisy-chained from one source. In a surround system the receiver subwoofer output feeds the LFE input, and the app then sets volume and filter to follow the receiver bass management.
Alternatives
The Proficient FRS-12 from the Signature line uses a single fiberglass driver of the same size, a single amplifier and a rated response reaching down to 20 Hz.
