The FRS-8 is the smallest subwoofer in the Signature FRS family made by Proficient Audio Systems, a range that also includes 10 inch and 12 inch versions. Proficient describes the Signature line as taking the ideas of Sunfire subwoofers and building on that legacy, and the FRS-8 applies them to an 8 inch driver in a cabinet that stays under 30 cm in every direction.
Key specs that matter
Bass comes from an 8 inch (200 mm) high-excursion woofer whose cone is reinforced with fiberglass. It is driven by a Class D amplifier that Proficient rates at 1000 W peak, and the stated response runs from 24 Hz to 200 Hz within plus or minus 3 dB. The enclosure measures 261.6 x 271.8 x 281.94 mm and the complete subwoofer weighs 10.2 kg. Inputs are RCA line level, paired with buffered outputs. The mains stage can be switched between 100 and 240 V, and a limited 2-year warranty applies.
Engineering and use context
Proficient pairs the fiberglass cone with a high-force motor built around a back EMF approach, reasoning that a very stiff cone and a strong magnet system let the driver push against the air pressure trapped in a small sealed volume while its output stays linear and under control. The walls are cut from 1 inch MDF, which limits panel flex in a box this compact, and they are coated with five layers of piano black lacquer. Adjustment does not rely on knobs on the rear panel. Instead the DSP inside the amplifier is reached over Bluetooth Low Energy through the Sub Station app, where the user sets the parameters from a phone. A 5 V USB socket is built into the unit to power an optional wireless audio adapter, so the FRS-8 can receive its signal without a cable and be placed wherever mains power is available. With the lowest mass of the three Signature models, it is the easiest of them to move or hide beside furniture.
Pairing
Any AV receiver with an LFE or sub pre-out can drive the FRS-8 over its RCA line-level socket, as can a stereo preamplifier or an integrated amplifier equipped with pre-outs. Through the buffered outputs a second Signature unit can be fed from the first, giving two bass sources without a separate splitter. Because the mains stage is selectable, a unit bought in one country can be used in another without a step-down transformer.
Alternatives
The Proficient FRS-10 uses a 10 inch fiberglass driver with the same lower limit in a heavier 15.7 kg cabinet.
