The FDS-10 is the 10 inch model in the Protege FDS subwoofer series from Proficient Audio. The series comes in four sizes - 8, 10, 12 and 15 inch - and Proficient presents it as a continuation of the technology developed for its Sunfire subwoofers, with the emphasis on compact power in a small enclosure. Proficient pitches it at media rooms and home cinemas as well as music listening.
Key specs that matter
A single active 10 inch high-excursion polypropylene cone is paired with two passive 10 inch polypropylene cones of the same type. Proficient rates the response at 26 to 160 Hz within 3 dB either way. Its internal Class-D amplification is specified at 500 W peak, and no continuous rating is published. Its low-pass filter is adjustable from 50 to 160 Hz. The cabinet measures 334 x 351 x 353 mm, is finished in matte black over MDF, and the mains supply can be switched between 100 to 120 V and 220 to 240 V. The warranty period is two years.
Engineering and use context
Using one driven woofer and a pair of passive radiators instead of a port lets the enclosure stay small while still producing deep bass from a box of modest volume. The active woofer is described as a high back-EMF design with an oversized magnet for greater motor force. On the rear panel sit a volume dial, the crossover dial with an LFE position, a 0 or 180 degree phase selector and a three-way ON, AUTO and OFF mode switch. In AUTO the subwoofer drops into standby after roughly 15 minutes without signal and wakes when audio returns, with a blue or red status light showing the state. A 5 V USB socket and mounting standoffs are there to power and hold the optional Proficient wireless receiver, allowing placement well away from the electronics with no long interconnect. Power enters through a detachable IEC cord, and a slow-blow fuse protects the electronics.
Pairing
The simplest hookup is a single RCA lead leading from an AV receiver sub pre-out straight into the LFE socket, with the crossover dial turned to LFE so the receiver handles bass management. A two-channel preamp or integrated amp that lacks a dedicated sub pre-out can drive the left and right low-level RCA inputs instead, and the onboard crossover dial then decides the frequency at which the bass unit takes over from the main speakers.
Alternatives
The Proficient FDS-12 steps up one driver size within the Protege line, rated down to 24 Hz with a 600 W peak amplifier in a 375 x 393 x 394 mm cabinet.
