The F3-12 is the top model of the F3 Series powered subwoofers from Fyne Audio of Glasgow, above the F3-8 and F3-10. Fyne intends it for both films and music, with a Bass Boost mode aimed at home theatre LFE. It was sold at GBP 999.98 for a single unit, and Fyne has since moved it to its discontinued list.
Key specs that matter
A 300 mm multi-fibre cone on the front baffle is driven by a 520 W DDX Direct Digital amplifier. The vented enclosure holds 53 litres and uses a downward-firing port. The quoted low frequency limit is 28 Hz at -6 dB in a typical room, and Bass Boost raises the level by 3 dB across 30 to 70 Hz. Connections are two phono inputs for left and right stereo signals plus one mono LFE input, with an 80 Hz second order low pass input filter and LFE provision. It operates from 220 to 240 V at 50 Hz with a maximum consumption of 260 W. It stands 480 mm tall with its feet, 375 mm wide and 443 mm deep, weighing 20 kg net.
Engineering and use context
Fyne describes DDX as a patented all-digital amplifier related to Class D, offering more power, better efficiency and lower RFI output than a standard design. The DSP controls the low pass filtering on both input types, manages dynamic range automatically, protects against overload, and provides the Bass Boost lift for movie soundtracks. A blend of fibres in the cone keeps it light and rigid, and the soft rubber roll surround plus a deep voice coil and motor allow large excursion and high power handling. The cabinet is heavily built from braced high rigidity MDF. Its large port is flared at both ends with a mathematically derived profile for low turbulence, and compliant floor coupling mounts sit underneath. The F3-12 powers up either permanently or on signal detection, mutes itself after roughly 10 minutes of silence, and offers phase control and a 12 V trigger.
Pairing
A surround decoder or AV amplifier plugs into the mono LFE socket, while two-channel owners can drive the left and right phono inputs from a preamplifier or amplifier line output. Using the stereo inputs brings the low pass filter into the signal path, so the main speakers cover everything above. The trigger input ties its power state to the rest of a home cinema system. The cabinet needs more floor space than the smaller F3 models.
Alternatives
The Fyne Audio F3-10 is the smaller F3 subwoofer, pairing a 250 mm driver with a 475 W DDX amplifier in a 34 litre cabinet weighing 16 kg.
