The F3-10 sits in the middle of the F3 Series of powered subwoofers from Fyne Audio, placed between the F3-8 and the F3-12. Fyne designs the F3 range mainly for home theatre, with a Bass Boost mode for film LFE, but the stereo inputs also let it join a music system. Key specs that matter

A 250 mm front mounted driver is powered by a 475 W Direct Digital (DDX) amplifier. The vented cabinet has an internal volume of 34 litres and a port that fires downward. Fyne gives the low frequency limit as 32 Hz at -6 dB in a typical room, and the Bass Boost function adds 3 dB between 35 and 70 Hz. Inputs are a stereo pair of phono sockets and one mono LFE socket, and the input filter is an 80 Hz second order low pass with LFE provision. The unit runs on 220 to 240 V at 50 Hz and draws up to 240 W. It measures 410 x 340 x 393 mm (H x W x D, feet included) and weighs 16 kg net.

Engineering and use context

DDX is a patented all-digital amplifier technology similar to Class D, which Fyne chose for its high output, efficiency and low RFI emission. A DSP engine handles the low pass filters on the LFE and stereo inputs, automatic dynamic range management and overload protection, and it runs the Bass Boost feature. The cone uses a mix of fibres for a light and stiff diaphragm, and a soft rubber roll surround with a deep coil and motor gives it long excursion. The large diameter port has a flared profile at both ends, derived mathematically to keep turbulence low. Heavy braced MDF panels form the cabinet, and large compliant feet couple it to the floor while protecting hard floor surfaces. The subwoofer can stay on continuously or switch on when it senses a signal, and it mutes after about 10 minutes without input. Phase control and a 12 V trigger input are also fitted.

Pairing

Home cinema owners connect the sub output of their AV receiver to the dedicated LFE socket, and in a two-channel system the phono pair takes line level signals supplied by a preamp or by an integrated amp that has pre-out sockets. The low pass filter on the stereo inputs means the main speakers keep the band above that point. The trigger input lets the F3-10 power up together with an AV system, and Fyne pitches it for use with many types of home theatre speakers.
