The Enigma Veyron Subwoofer, type EV-SB-1.0-A, is the active bass unit of the Enigma Veyron collection, the Kharma family that also covers the 1D, 2D, 4D and 5D loudspeakers, the MP1000 amplifier, a Powerblock, an audio rack and cables. It is built to match the rest of the collection both technically and visually. Each unit is a modular level, and two can be stacked into one column.

Key specs that matter

The single 15-inch driver has a carbon composite sandwich cone and was developed in-house. The internal amplifier uses a linear topology rated at 200 W nominal and 400 W peak, with a bandwidth of 4 Hz to 180 kHz, THD+N and IMD both at minus 120 dB, a damping factor above 2000, 26 dB of gain and 2.6 V sensitivity. Kharma lists a range of 17 Hz to 250 Hz and a maximum of 117 dB SPL. A single level stands 540 mm high, 780 mm wide and 687 mm deep, while the bottom level reaches 591 mm because a felt-lined block is screwed under its stands. Net weight is 210 kg.

Engineering and use context

The enclosure combines four-centimetre Bulletwood panels with aluminium plates, finished in black brushed and anodised aluminium with Macassar wood and gold trim. Each level rests on Diamond stands - tungsten balls sitting on diamond discs - which keep contact with the floor to a minimum. A bottom level that carries a second sub uses triple-diamond discs so the discs do not crack under the combined load, and the weight limit of the stands is the reason no more than two levels are allowed. The integrated DSP runs mixed-mode 64-bit processing at 600 microseconds latency, holds five factory presets and up to 40 custom ones, and is controlled from an iPad over Ethernet. Its high-pass and low-pass filters run from 6 to 24 dB per octave, and five PEQ points accept Q values from 0.2 to 25. A switch on the rear turns the internal DSP off, and in that mode the direct input feeds the amplifier straight away. A front LED turns red, purple or white to flag current overload, DC at the output or low mains voltage. The power inlet carries a gold-plated copper isolator, and the unit is set for 115 V or 230 V mains.

Pairing

Connections are one balanced XLR stereo input with 10 kOhm impedance, one balanced XLR direct input and one balanced XLR mono output. In master and slave use the output of the first sub feeds the direct input of up to two further units, so only one DSP has to be set. For more than two subwoofers behind an Enigma Veyron speaker, Kharma offers a separate DSP module built into the style of the Enigma Veyron Audio Rack.

Alternatives

The Kharma Exquisite Midi Subwoofer is the 15-inch active model styled for the Exquisite collection.
