The Elegance Subwoofer, type S10SB-A, is the only dedicated bass unit in the Elegance collection from Kharma, the brand Charles van Oosterum set up in 1993 as the international name for work he had started in 1982 under Oosterum Luidspreker Systems. The Elegance line took over from the Ceramique range introduced in 1998, and the subwoofer sits alongside the S7, dB7, dB9-S and dB11-S main speakers. Kharma presents it as the bass unit for 2.1 stereo setups as well as 5.1 and 7.1 home cinema systems.

Key specs that matter

A single 10-inch long-throw aluminium woofer is driven by an internal amplifier rated at 180 W RMS. Kharma quotes a frequency range of 22 Hz to 200 Hz and a maximum output of 111 dB SPL. Input impedance is 50 kOhm. The cabinet measures 448 mm high, 400 mm wide and 400 mm deep and weighs 22 kg, and the mains fuse is a 3.15 A slow-blow type. The box holds four spike discs, a standard power cord and a burn-in CD, and the distributor warranty runs 5 years once the registration card and a copy of the invoice are returned.

Engineering and use context

All filtering happens in a built-in DSP that uses mixed-mode 64-bit processing with a latency of 600 microseconds. The high-pass filter covers 15 to 50 Hz and the low-pass 40 to 200 Hz, with slopes of 6, 12 or 24 dB per octave and a choice of Bessel, Butterworth or Linkwitz-Riley alignment. Phase turns through 0 to 180 degrees, level runs from minus 60 dB to 0 dB, and five parametric EQ points work between 20 and 200 Hz with Q values from 0.5 to 5. Five factory presets are stored in the unit, and up to 40 custom presets can be saved. All of these settings are made through the free Kharma Control app on an iPad, which finds the subwoofer when its rear LAN socket is on the same network as the tablet. Where no home network is wanted, an Apple Airport Express can create a standalone Wi-Fi link to the sub. The app also offers standby, mute, a VU meter for each input channel and a demo mode. The cabinet shape copies the Elegance speakers and is built for stiffness against panel resonance.

Pairing

Signal arrives through the stereo summed inputs, so both channels from a preamplifier, processor or integrated amplifier output can feed it together, and a single cable also works with only one channel reaching the sub. As an active unit it adds no load to the main power amplifier.
