The Defiance V10 is the middle model of the V-Series, the value half of the Defiance subwoofer family that Paradigm Electronics of Canada introduced on August 20, 2018. It sits between the V8 and the V12 and launched at USD 549. The V-Series shares the Defiance cabinet approach with the costlier X-Series but uses a smaller amplifier and a conventional driver surround, and the V10 is sold only in Satin Black.

Key specs that matter

Inside the V10, a Class-D amplifier with ratings of 120 W RMS and 250 W dynamic peak works a 254 mm carbon-loaded polypropylene cone. On-axis response is 29 Hz to 200 Hz within 3 dB either way, and Paradigm quotes low frequency extension to 26 Hz by the DIN method. Low-pass filtering runs from 35 Hz to 120 Hz and can be bypassed, while sub to satellite phase is continuously variable from 0 to 180 degrees. Input sensitivity is 100 mV mono at maximum volume and RCA input impedance is 8.3 kohm. The cabinet stands 39.9 cm tall, 36.2 cm wide and 39.7 cm deep including the grille, for a weight of 15.23 kg.

Engineering and use context

Paradigm describes the enclosure as a high-velocity, low-turbulence ported design. The driver is mounted flush with the cabinet and faces downward, and the port also exits through the base, so the visible faces carry no openings. Filter and phase settings are adjusted from a smartphone through the free Paradigm Subwoofer Control app on iOS or Android phones, and a Micro USB socket on the rear handles calibration microphone input and firmware updates. Paradigm fitted improved soft-clipping circuitry to limit overload at high drive, plus an auto on and off function that wakes the sub when signal arrives. The Defiance WT wireless kit, sold separately, removes the need for a signal cable from the processor.

Pairing

Two RCA line inputs accept either the lone LFE output from a surround processor, or both channels of a stereo preamplifier output, so the V10 fits both home cinema and two-channel systems. Two speaker-level inputs connect to the binding posts of an integrated amplifier that lacks a subwoofer output. The variable crossover range allows blending with bookshelf monitors that roll off in the 50 Hz to 100 Hz region, and the bypass lets a receiver bass management take over in multichannel use.
