The Basson 88 is an active subwoofer from the French loudspeaker maker Davis Acoustics, presented by the company as the big brother of the Basson 77. It pairs a larger driver with a stronger amplifier than that smaller model and is intended for living rooms of 25 to 40 m2. It was offered in a black ash finish at a last listed price of EUR 669.95 and is no longer in current sale.

Key specs that matter

A single 31 cm woofer with a cellulose fibre cone does all the work, loaded by a bass reflex enclosure with two ports on the front baffle. A class D amplifier rated at 1000 W maximum drives it, and Davis does not publish a continuous RMS figure. Its upper cut-off frequency is variable from 30 Hz up to 200 Hz, and the lower limit of the working range is given as 25 Hz. Phase can be switched between 0 and 180 degrees. Connection is through a pair of RCA jacks, used either as a stereo line feed or as one LFE link. The cabinet stands 47 cm high, 34.5 cm wide and 41.5 cm deep, and it weighs 15.5 kg.

Engineering and use context

Because both the cone and the reflex vents face forward, the box does not rely on a floor or wall gap below or behind it to breathe, which makes it easier to tuck between the main speakers or into a cabinet run. Compared with the Basson 77, which uses a 25 cm paper cone and a 600 W amplifier in a 36 cm tall box, the 88 moves to a larger cellulose driver, a stronger amplifier and a taller cabinet of the same depth. Its adjustable crossover reaches higher than the ceiling on the 77, which gives more room to blend with compact satellites or stand-mounted boxes that stop producing low frequencies fairly high up. Davis lists automatic adjustment of the incoming signal level, so the gain stage adapts to hotter or quieter feeds without separate sensitivity settings on the rear panel.

Pairing

For films, LFE mode takes the dedicated bass channel from a surround receiver, in which case the internal filter can be opened fully and bass management left to the receiver. For stereo use, the line input takes a preamp-level signal from a stereo amplifier or control unit, with the variable filter set just above the point where the main speakers begin to fall away. The 0 or 180 degree phase switch helps match its output with the main speakers when the sub cannot sit on the same plane as them.

The Davis Acoustics Basson 777 uses the same driver size with a 600 W class D amplifier and a lower filter ceiling, aimed at rooms of 20 to 50 m2.
