The Basson 777 is a powered 31 cm subwoofer made by Davis Acoustics, a French speaker and driver maker founded in 1986 by Michel Visan and based in Troyes. It belongs to the DMAX line, where it is listed next to the Mani MK2 and Dhavani MK2 towers, the Stentaure C MK2 center and the On Wall XL model, and it sits above the smaller Basson 77. The maker aims it at rooms from 20 m2 to 50 m2, while the 77 is intended for 15 to 30 m2.
Key specs that matter
Its driver has a treated cellulose fibre cone and a large half-roll surround. A Class D amplifier powers it, and Davis quotes 600 W, which is peak output, with 150 W RMS available continuously, so the headline number is four times the steady rating. Output extends down to 25 Hz, while the upper cut-off is adjustable between 30 Hz and 120 Hz. The cabinet is 42 cm high, 34.6 cm wide and 41.7 cm deep, and the maker gives the weight as 25 kg.
Engineering and use context
The half-roll surround allows long cone travel, so the cone can move a large volume of air. Bass reflex loading uses a laminar port on the front panel, and the driver also faces forward, which means the subwoofer does not need clearance behind or below it and can go close to a wall or into a corner, where Davis notes that output rises. On the rear there are a level knob, a crossover knob and a two-position phase selector offering 0 or 180 degrees. The amplifier switches itself on when it detects an incoming signal. The pair of RCA inputs takes a stereo line signal or one LFE channel, and French product data also lists stereo high-level speaker terminals for use with amplifiers that lack a subwoofer output. A removable fabric grille covers the front, and Davis sells the model in a single black ash finish.
Pairing
When used for film, the LFE input is connected to the LFE output of a surround processor or receiver, whose bass management then sets the crossover, so the low-pass control on the sub should be set to its highest position. In a stereo system the line inputs take a preamplifier output, and the crossover control should be matched to the frequency at which the main pair starts to lose output. Flipping the phase selector helps if the cabinet ends up farther from or nearer to the seat than the two main speakers.
Alternatives
The Davis Basson 77 is the smaller subwoofer in the range, using a 25 cm paper cone driver and two front ports in a 36 x 30 x 41.5 cm cabinet.
