The Basson 77 is an active subwoofer from Davis Acoustics, the French loudspeaker maker founded in 1986 that was an early user of Kevlar, carbon and fibreglass in driver design and released its first home speaker, the DK200, in 1993. Its Basson siblings, the 88 and the 777, both use a 31 cm driver, and its maker aims the 77 at living rooms of 15 to 30 m2. It is presented as a companion for the Easy and Lifestyle speaker series, with Italian pricing of EUR 499 in black ash and EUR 699 in black lacquer or white satin lacquer.
Key specs that matter
A single 25 cm long-throw woofer with a reinforced cellulose fibre paper cone does all the work. Its Class D amplifier is rated at 170 W nominal and 600 W maximum. Its variable low-pass filter spans 30 Hz to 120 Hz, and Davis gives 25 Hz as the lowest cut-off of the system. The box is 36 cm tall, 30 cm wide and 41.5 cm deep and weighs 15.5 kg. Two RCA sockets accept either a line-level stereo feed or a single LFE channel, and the rear panel carries volume, crossover frequency and a phase switch with 0 and 180 degree positions.
Engineering and use context
The cone hangs on a large half-roll surround, a choice Davis makes so the driver can travel far and move a lot of air from a modest diameter. Loading is bass reflex, and both ports open on the front baffle next to the forward-facing driver, so the cabinet does not need free space behind it for the ports to work. An auto-sensing circuit watches the incoming signal and wakes the amplifier when music or a film soundtrack starts, removing the need to reach for a power switch. Thanks to its compact footprint, the enclosure fits beside a TV cabinet or under a side table more easily than the larger Basson models, whose cabinets reach 47 cm in height. A two-year commercial warranty covers the unit.
Pairing
Because its crossover works only in the low bass, the Basson 77 suits compact bookshelf or satellite speakers from Davis and other brands whose output falls away in the low bass. In a stereo system the line input can take a preamp or integrated amplifier with a subwoofer or pre-out socket, while in a cinema system the LFE input connects to the sub output of an AV receiver, which then handles bass management itself.
Alternatives
The Davis Acoustics Basson 88 is the larger model with a 1,000 W maximum amplifier, meant for rooms of 25 to 40 m2.
