YG Acoustics created the XX 3 to mark its twentieth anniversary, and the model sits in the Reference range as a single-tower, four-way passive loudspeaker. It shares its cabinet and driver line-up with the XX 3 Live, a powered version that pairs the same towers with a dedicated controller.

YG fits eight drivers per side. At the top is a proprietary Lattice hybrid tweeter measuring 26 mm, working with an advanced airframe. Two 15 cm midrange drivers and three 18.5 cm midbass drivers follow, all with YG aluminium cones and neodymium magnets, and a pair of 28 cm aluminium cone woofers powered by ultra-high field strength motors takes the bass. The passive model reaches from below 20 Hz to 40 kHz in usable output, with 88 dB sensitivity. Nominal impedance averages 4 ohm and falls to a minimum of 2.8 ohm. Height is 148 cm, width 35 cm and depth 64 cm, and one speaker weighs 170 kg unpacked.

Engineering and use context

Three-layer and five-layer panels of aerospace-grade aluminium make up the cabinet walls, which are treated with constrained layer damping. Signals are split at 90 Hz, 360 Hz and 1.85 kHz by an Ultracoherent passive network, which YG designs for accurate phase alignment over a broad band. Components include a silver-gold alloy, bespoke capacitors, advanced resistors and resonance-damped inductors on layouts refined through computer optimisation. The standard colour choice is silver or black, and other finishes can be specified.

Pairing

The passive XX 3 needs an external amplifier that remains comfortable at the low impedance minimum. Buyers who want the electronics included can choose the Live version instead, which drives every one of the eight units from its own 700 W amplifier, rated at 0.0006% THD+N from 20 Hz to 20 kHz at half peak power, 137 dB unweighted signal to noise, 93% efficiency and 250 micro-ohm output impedance. Its crossover moves into DSP, developed jointly with Bel Canto, and its bass extends to 18 Hz. The Live controller measures 94 x 400 x 316 mm, weighs 8.7 kg and accepts AES, S/PDIF, Toslink, USB and Ethernet sources, with USB taking up to 24 bit and 384 kHz plus DSD128, two RCA line inputs and an MM or MC phono input with MC loads of 50, 100, 500 and 1,000 ohm.
