The XX from YG Acoustics is a passive four-way tower from the company's Reference line, built by the Colorado and Cambridge based maker established in 2002. Unlike the four-tower XV 3, the XX puts all of its drivers into a single cabinet per channel. YG sells it alongside the XX 3 anniversary edition and an active XX Live variant.
Key specs that matter
Every XX cabinet holds eight drive units. Treble is handled by a proprietary 26 mm YG Lattice hybrid tweeter with an advanced airframe. Below it sit a pair of 15 cm midrange units with aluminium cones and three 18.5 cm aluminium cone midbass units, each group using neodymium motors, while two 28 cm aluminium cone bass units with ultra-high field strength motors cover the lowest octaves. YG gives usable output from below 20 Hz up to 40 kHz. Sensitivity is rated at 88 dB. Impedance is 4 ohm on average and dips to 2.8 ohm at its lowest point. Each cabinet stands 148 cm high, 35 cm wide and 64 cm deep, and weighs 170 kg without packaging.
Engineering and use context
The enclosure combines three-layer and five-layer sections of aerospace aluminium, damped with a constrained layer construction. The Ultracoherent crossover divides the signal at 90 Hz, 360 Hz and 1.85 kHz and is designed for close phase alignment across a very wide frequency range. Its parts list includes silver-gold alloy, custom capacitors, advanced resistors and inductors damped against resonance, and the circuit boards use layouts optimised by computation. YG states that distortion stays very low throughout the range. Standard finishes are silver or black, and other colours can be ordered on request.
Pairing
The low impedance minimum is a demanding load, so the XX calls for a power amplifier rated to deliver current into impedances well below the average figure. Owners who would rather not choose separate electronics can look at the XX Live, which keeps the same cabinet format but adds DSP crossovers developed with Bel Canto and a dedicated 700 W amplifier for every driver, giving 5.6 kW per channel, plus a separate controller with analogue, digital and phono inputs and Roon Ready streaming.
Alternatives
For a bigger passive setup YG Acoustics lists the XV 3, a four-tower Reference design with ten drivers per channel and a 3 ohm minimum impedance.
