The Tonda is the larger of Vimberg's two floorstanders and the heaviest of its three current models, built alongside the Amea and Mino in the Tidal Audio factory. Jörn Janczak is the designer and CEO of both Tidal and Vimberg, and for Vimberg he uses drivers from Accuton's standard catalogue rather than the custom units reserved for Tidal. Pricing is GBP 41,000 or EUR 42,900 per pair, and each pair is ordered from the factory, with about 60 days before delivery.
Key specs that matter
Three-way operation relies on a 30 mm ceramic tweeter, a 168 mm Accuton Cell midrange with a ceramic cone and a trio of 190 mm Accuton woofers with 3D honeycomb sandwich aluminium diaphragms. The cabinet measures about 1440 mm in height, 439 mm in width and 650 mm in depth. One speaker weighs 96 kg bare, 110 kg packed and 142 kg in the ATA flight case, listed at USD 1,600 per pair. The ceramic tweeter version is also called the Tonda C, and the diamond tweeter version is sold as the Tonda D for an extra GBP 8,500. Converting a C to a D later is possible but needs a crossover modification at the Vimberg headquarters.
Engineering and use context
Raw cabinets are produced in Germany from waterproof HDF with internal bracing and aluminium reinforcement, then sanded, lacquered and polished by machine and by hand. Veneer is applied under the lacquer so the paint layer stays even. Each woofer sits in an aluminium mounting ring, while the tweeter and midrange share an aluminium sub-baffle, decoupled from the box by a resonance-absorbing frame of aluminium and cork, and their compartment is milled with jigs. All drivers are fastened with machine screws instead of wood screws. The monopulse crossover, with Mundorf and Duelund parts, is mounted on a thick baseplate at the bottom of the cabinet, and Mogami cable connects it to pure silver Argento terminals whose polymer housing avoids magnetic interference. Dual-tune bass reflex ports keep port noise low. After 24 hours of burn-in, every speaker is measured, and the left and right units of a pair have their frequency response curves overlaid to confirm they match.
Pairing
The nominal load is 4 ohm, falling to 3.4 ohm at 100 Hz, and sensitivity is 90 dB at 2.83 V over 1 m at 1 kHz. The Tonda ships with height-adjustable decoupling gliders that have Teflon inserts and 3D-shaped installation triggers.
Alternatives
The Vimberg Mino is the more compact floorstander in the range, using a 90 mm ceramic midrange and three smaller woofers in a 1280 mm tall cabinet.
