Sonora is the entry point to the Peak Consult loudspeaker line from Middelfart in Denmark, a company started in 1996 and restructured in 2021 under former Dynaudio co-founder Wilfried Ehrenholz, with Karl-Heinz Fink as consultant. Unlike the three-way towers above it, this floorstander is a two-way passive design in a sealed box helped by a rear auxiliary bass radiator. Pricing was set at GBP 23,000, USD 25,000 or EUR 25,000 per pair.

Key specs that matter

The treble unit is a 25 mm Scan-Speak Illuminator D3004/662000 silk dome, built to Peak Consult specification and matched in pairs to within 0.1 dB. Below it sits an Audio Technology mid/bass unit with a one-piece sandwich moulded cone, a die-cast magnesium chassis, an internal magnet made of six neodymium pieces in a star layout and a Kapton voice coil wound with aluminium wire. A 20 cm polypropylene passive radiator fitted to the rear wall supports the bottom octaves. The filter crosses at 2,500 Hz with 12 dB per octave slopes. Quoted efficiency is 85 dB at 1 W and 1 m, and response reaches 28 Hz to 30 kHz within 3 dB as a typical in-room figure. The cabinet measures 113 x 28 x 38.5 cm and weighs 68 kg.

Engineering and use context

Three layers of HDF form walls up to 60 mm thick, the baffle is thicker still, and a 14 mm American walnut layer covers the outside. A sloping internal shelf runs from beneath the mid/bass driver to beneath the radiator and splits the box in two, and the lower part is filled with blasting-grade sand of 0.3 to 1 mm grain. The baffle is canted back for time alignment and faceted against diffraction, while the rear wall leans forward so no two surfaces are parallel. Crossover parts from Mundorf, Jantzen and Duelund are wired by hand without circuit boards onto two MDF boards, one for treble and one for bass, inside a sealed sand-filled chamber that limits microphonic effects and heat. Four stainless feet with double O-ring decoupling and ceramic ball bearings carry the weight, and Argento terminals take the cables. Finishes are American black walnut with acrylic and leather trim, or pure white or midnight black acrylic with leather.

Pairing

Impedance sits at a typical 7 ohm and falls no lower than 4 ohm, held steady by the Peak Linear Impedance Control crossover so that amplifiers of many power ratings can drive it. Full level of 95 dB continuous and 105 dB in short peaks needs more than 35 W. Bi-wire terminals are available on request without surcharge.

Alternatives

The Peak Consult Sinfonia moves up to a three-way ported layout with a separate 11 cm midrange and a dedicated woofer.
