The Sonetto III in its G2 form is the smallest floorstanding model of the Sonetto family from Sonus faber, the Italian maker based near Vicenza. It is a passive 2.5-way design that uses a lute-shaped enclosure built from wood, leather and concrete, and each pair ships in two cartons. It is offered in walnut, wenge and piano black. The wood versions carry an open-pore finish in which the grain of the veneer stays visible.

Key specs that matter

The front panel holds three drivers, with a 1.1 inch DAD Arrow Point tweeter at the top carrying a copper shorting ring and specified for an extended upper range. Below it are two 6.5 inch cone units, one working as a midwoofer and one as a woofer, and each has an aluminium demodulation ring in its motor. The single crossover point sits at 2,700 Hz. Sonus faber quotes a response of 38 Hz to 40,000 Hz at the -3 dB points, a sensitivity of 88 dB at 2.83 V and a nominal impedance of 4 ohm. Each cabinet measures 28.7 cm wide, 105.8 cm tall and 35 cm deep and weighs 25.8 kg. Packed, a pair weighs about 58 kg. The reflex design, the enclosure materials and the tweeter family are shared with the larger Sonetto towers, while the III opens the tower models of the line.

Engineering and use context

In a 2.5-way layout both cones share the bass range, while only the upper one continues up to the tweeter. This lets the pair of cones move more air in the low registers without a separate midrange driver and a second crossover point. Sonus faber adds the copper and aluminium rings to the magnet systems to limit distortion linked to field variation while each voice coil travels. The lute outline, with curved side walls that narrow toward the rear, avoids large parallel inner surfaces. The concrete base adds mass at floor level and steadies the narrow column. Bass reflex loading uses ducts that vent both to the rear and downward toward the base, leaving the front baffle free of any port.

Pairing

Sonus faber lists a suggested amplifier power of 50 W to 280 W. Since the nominal impedance is low, an integrated or power amplifier whose output is specified into low-impedance loads is the logical partner. The Sonetto range also includes centre, bookshelf and in-wall models, so the Sonetto III can anchor a multichannel setup drawn from one family with shared tweeter technology.
