The S5t is a floorstanding loudspeaker in the S-Series from Perlisten Audio, the American company's upper range. It takes much of its technology from the S7t, which the maker calls its flagship, in a more modestly sized cabinet. All S-Series models share the same tweeter array and Perlisten uses one matching technique for the voicing of every S model. The S5t holds both THX Dominus and THX Ultra certification, and Perlisten describes Dominus as the highest THX rating.

Key specs that matter

This is a 3-way design that can be set up as bass reflex or as acoustic suspension. A 28 mm beryllium dome sits at the centre of the DPC array between two 28 mm TPCD domes, and two 180 mm Textreme TPCD woofers handle the bass. Frequency response at -10 dB is 24 Hz to 32 kHz vented and 36 Hz to 32 kHz sealed, while typical in-room extension is 20 Hz vented and 23 Hz sealed. From 80 Hz to 20 kHz the response holds within plus or minus 1.5 dB. Sensitivity in half space is 89.5 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m, and impedance is 4 ohms nominal and 3.0 ohms minimum. SPL capability at 1 m across 100 Hz to 20 kHz is 114.3 dB peak, or 114.0 dB peak with 2nd and 3rd harmonics kept below 3%. Each tower measures 1119 x 240 x 400 mm and weighs 43.2 kg. Standard finishes are piano gloss black and white, with special edition veneers also offered.

Engineering and use context

DPC stands for Directivity Pattern Control, a tweeter and waveguide array for which Perlisten has a US patent pending. According to Perlisten, the array is the product of 18 months of Comsol acoustic modelling, simulation and prototyping and is meant to control directivity through the vocal range and the treble. All transducers were developed by Perlisten's own engineers, working with partner companies in the USA and Sweden on the diaphragm materials. TPCD means thin-ply carbon diaphragms, used both for the two outer domes of the array and for the woofers. The bass section can run vented or sealed, and Perlisten presents this choice as an adjustment for listener preference.

Pairing

The recommended amplifier power is 100 to 300 W RMS. Given the low impedance minimum, the tower is best driven by a stereo amplifier or multichannel power amp specified into 4 ohms.

Alternatives

The Perlisten S7t is the 4-way tower of the same S-Series, using four 180 mm Textreme TPCD woofers, 92.2 dB sensitivity and a 100 to 600 W RMS amplifier range in a 55.7 kg cabinet.
