The Response D30S is the updated version of the D30 floorstander in the ProAc Response Range, built by the company in Brackley, Northamptonshire. It is sold with a choice of tweeter - the D30DS uses a silk dome and the D30RS a ribbon. When the S version arrived, ProAc stated that the cabinet dimensions of the earlier D30 would stay the same and that the price would not change. The main revision is a new bass driver whose cone is similar to the one in the larger Response D48.
Key specs that matter
The single 165 mm (6.5 in) mid/bass unit has an acoustically damped Pagina Mica cone with a phase plug. On the D30DS the tweeter is a 25 mm (1 in) silk dome with air cooling and inner damping, placed off-centre in mirrored pairs, while the D30RS uses the ProAc ribbon, 60 x 10 mm, driven by an alnico magnet and damped by a chamber behind it. Frequency response is 20 Hz to 30 kHz, sensitivity is 89 dB linear for 1 W at 1 m, nominal impedance is 8 ohms, and ProAc recommends 10 to 200 W of amplifier power. Height is 1041 mm on spikes. The cabinet is 215 mm wide and 266 mm deep on a 257 x 311 mm plinth and weighs 28 kg per cabinet.
Engineering and use context
ProAc developed this bass driver specifically for the D30S. The cone is made from pulp and mica and coated with an acoustic dope, and the phase plug was added to improve detail around the crossover point. ProAc says the new driver and a revised crossover give the model a flat frequency response and a resistive load. The crossover uses high quality parts on a dedicated circuit board with multistrand oxygen-free copper wiring, and it is split for bi-wiring or bi-amplification through nickel silver terminals. Crimplene cloth covers the front, with a magnetic fixing available on some finishes. ProAc offers walnut, natural oak, cherry, mahogany and black ash as standard veneers, with liquidambar, rosewood and ebony at extra cost.
Pairing
Owners choosing between the two versions can match the tweeter type to the rest of a ProAc system, since the same dome and ribbon options appear on the D2, D20 and D48. A resistive load with this sensitivity is within reach of low-power valve amplifiers, while the higher recommended figure also covers powerful transistor amplifiers. The split terminals also allow two stereo amplifiers to share the load.
Alternatives
The ProAc Response D48 is the larger floorstander of the Response Range, with two mid/bass drivers and a 4 ohm nominal load.
