The R 6 Avantgarde is the middle version of Audiovector's R 6 floorstander, from the Danish company whose drivers are handmade in Denmark. Audiovector builds its models as upgradeable families, and the R 6 comes as Signature, Avantgarde and Arreté, each of which can be upgraded to the next. The Avantgarde replaces the Signature's soft dome tweeter with an Air Motion Transformer, also used in the Arreté.

Key specs that matter

It is a five-driver design with the AMT tweeter, two front-firing 6.5 in mid/bass drivers, an internal 6.5 in woofer and an 8 in down-firing woofer, crossed over at 100 Hz, 350 Hz and 3 kHz. Frequency response is 26 Hz to 52 kHz, sensitivity is 91.5 dB and nominal impedance is 8 ohms. Amplifier power up to 450 W is supported. The cabinet measures 1234 mm high, 278 mm wide and 431 mm deep, and each speaker weighs 40 kg.

Engineering and use context

The AMT tweeter uses strong neodymium magnets and a light, precision-coated mylar membrane. It is fixed to the cabinet at three points with decoupling, an Audiovector principle called No Energy Storage, so that energy absorbed by the cabinet is not fed back into the membrane. The tweeter is open to the front and to the rear, which Audiovector calls the Soundstage Enhancement Concept, letting it move freely instead of working against a closed chamber. All R 6 versions received a new internal compound bass system, a down-firing isobaric bass reflex arrangement in which the two woofers work together on the same air volume, raising output from a narrow cabinet. The mid/bass drivers use Audiovector's own carbon cones and titanium voice coil formers. Crossovers are designed alongside the drivers using Audiovector's DFF technology. Cabinets have non-parallel surfaces and laminated baffles, and internal damping uses Nanopore material. The Arreté version adds a rear-firing midrange driver with its own crossover and the Freedom Grounding system, which routes currents between driver chassis to mains earth through a separate filter, but these are not part of the Avantgarde. Standard finishes include piano black, piano white, Italian walnut and Italian grey, with custom colours on request, and a black cloth grille is included. The terminal plate is carbon, and M8 spikes couple the plinth to the floor.

Pairing

The high sensitivity and easy nominal load let the R 6 Avantgarde work with valve amplifiers of 30 W upward as well as powerful solid-state designs, and the down-firing bass suits rooms of 20 to 40 m2.
