The Q Active 400 is a wireless active floorstanding speaker from the British company Q Acoustics, supplied as a pair together with a compact control hub. It is the tower sibling of the Q Active 200 standmount in the same active family. Across the pair there are eight drivers, and every one of them is fed by its own Class D amplifier, so no external power amplifier or AV receiver is needed. The starting price at launch was GBP 2,299 per pair, and the cabinets are offered in black and in white.

Key specs that matter

Each speaker carries two 58 mm BMR full range drivers and two 114 mm high-excursion subwoofers, with the hand-over between them set at 150 Hz. Q Acoustics lists 140 W continuous and 440 W peak output per speaker. Response is quoted as 35 Hz to 20 kHz at -6 dB. Each cabinet measures 825 x 320 x 290 mm and weighs 17.5 kg unboxed. Sources up to 32-bit/192 kHz are accepted, and the internal processing runs at 24-bit/96 kHz.

Engineering and use context

The pair of BMR units is mounted in an offset arrangement, angled sideways from the central axis and loaded by waveguides, which gives a dispersion of 180 degrees. Both bass drivers fire from the rear panel, one near the top of the enclosure and one near the bottom. Q Acoustics chose this layout to cancel internal standing waves in the cabinet and cut unwanted resonance. All physical connections live on the hub rather than on the speakers. It measures 40 x 180 x 112 mm, weighs 0.5 kg and sends the signal to both towers over a 5.8 GHz hi-res wireless link. On the hub there is HDMI ARC, a Toslink optical input rated to 96 kHz/24-bit, an analogue input, a moving magnet phono input with RIAA equalisation, a subwoofer output and Ethernet. Wireless options cover Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.2, AirPlay 2, Chromecast, Spotify Connect, UPnP and Roon Ready. The hub can be configured either for Chromecast built-in or for Works with Alexa, and voice control is possible through Google Assistant, Alexa or Siri.

Pairing

The TV link runs through HDMI ARC, while a record deck with a moving magnet cartridge goes straight to the phono socket with no separate stage. A CD player or other line source can use the optical or analogue inputs. Streaming covers Amazon Music, Apple Music, Deezer, Qobuz, Spotify and Tidal, and multiroom groups can be built through AirPlay 2, Roon, Chromecast or Alexa. For film use, the sub output on the hub lets an external powered bass unit join the system.
