The Concept 50 is a passive tower model from the Concept range from Q Acoustics, presented by the British company as a step up from the Concept 30 standmount for owners with larger spaces. In the Concept family it sits below the Concept 500 tower and alongside the Concept 90 centre channel, which lets it anchor a five-channel home cinema package as well as a stereo pair. The UK price is GBP 1,999 per pair, and the lacquer is gloss, either white or black. The warranty period quoted for it is five years.
Key specs that matter
Two 125 mm (5.0 in) plastic-cone mid/bass drivers of this ported two-way design share the work below a 2.1 kHz crossover, above which a 25 mm (1.0 in) fabric-dome tweeter takes over. The quoted frequency range is 42 Hz to 30 kHz at -6 dB. Nominal impedance is 6 ohm with a minimum of 3.6 ohm, and sensitivity is 90.5 dB for 2.83 V at 1 kHz. Recommended amplifier power runs from 25 to 150 W, and distortion is given as under 0.2 percent between 120 Hz and 20 kHz at 2.83 V. Effective internal volume is 28.8 litres. Height is 1025 mm, the footprint including the stabilising base is 418 mm wide and 319 mm deep, while the cabinet itself is only 180 mm wide. Each speaker weighs 22.9 kg.
Engineering and use context
The enclosure uses Gelcore construction - two wall layers with a non-setting gel between them that turns panel vibration into heat and is aimed at high-frequency cabinet noise. Point to Point (P2P) bracing is fitted only at the interior areas most prone to low-frequency movement, and Helmholtz Pressure Equaliser (HPE) tubes convert internal pressure to air velocity to suppress standing waves. The drivers were designed from the ground up, with a larger mid/bass voice coil giving 50 percent more power handling. A hermetic seal closes the tweeter, which is mounted so it does not touch the baffle directly. Underneath, an isolation base built from a pair of plates with suspension spheres between them decouples the cabinet from floor vibration. Bi-wire terminals give separate paths to the high and low sections, and the box includes ten ball-end feet, ten spikes, eight M4 screws and two support bases.
Pairing
A sensitivity above 90 dB means moderate amplifiers reach useful levels, but the low minimum impedance favours designs that are stable into low loads. Owners can run a separate cable to each terminal pair from one amplifier, since the dual posts are wired for bi-wiring.
Alternatives
The Q Acoustics Concept 500 is the more expensive floorstander of the same Concept family, priced at GBP 4,599 per pair.
