The Premium 701 Wireless Gen2 is the top model of Piega's active wireless tower range, a Swiss three-way floorstander that places the amplification inside the cabinet and takes its signal over a radio link instead of speaker cable. The second generation was introduced in March 2023, priced at EUR 3,750 per speaker in aluminium and EUR 3,950 in black or white. The smaller Premium 301 and Premium 501 Wireless Gen2 models share the same concept.
Key specs that matter
Piega fits an LDR 3056 ribbon tweeter, a driver that debuted in this model. Below it are one 140 mm MDS midrange unit and four 140 mm MDS bass drivers, all in a closed enclosure. A Class D amplifier rated at 200 W drives the set. Piega gives the frequency range as 28 Hz to 35 kHz and quotes a resolution of 24 bit and 192 kHz for the analogue input. Each cabinet measures 106 x 18 x 23 cm and weighs 29 kg. Versions exist for AC 100 to 120 V and 220 to 240 V at 50 or 60 Hz, standby consumption is listed as 500 mW or 1 W depending on version, and the maximum ambient temperature is 45 degrees C.
Engineering and use context
Gen2 gives up bass reflex loading in favour of a sealed box, a change Piega links to better impulse reproduction, more precise low frequencies and more freedom in where the speakers can stand. The housing is aluminium, offered brushed silver with a silver grille, black anodised with a black grille or white lacquered with a white grille. Sources connect to a separate hub rather than to the towers. The Piega Connect Plus, priced at EUR 590, sends the signal to both speakers through KleerNet, based on Kleer wireless technology, at up to 96 kHz. Streaming covers Apple AirPlay, Spotify Connect, Google Chromecast, Roon and Bluetooth, and the hub also allows the towers to join a multi-room system.
Pairing
No outboard amplifier is involved, so the pair needs only a hub and a source such as a phone, a network player, a CD transport or a record deck feeding a separate phono stage. Each speaker still needs a mains socket, so outlets should be planned on both sides. The sealed cabinets can stand nearer the wall behind them than ported towers, which helps in living rooms of about 20 m2 where free space behind the speakers is limited.
Alternatives
The Piega Premium 501 Wireless Gen2 is the smaller active tower of the same family, using a 120 mm midrange and four 120 mm woofers with 180 W of amplification in a 101 cm tall cabinet.
