The Premium 801 is a floorstanding loudspeaker from PIEGA of Switzerland and the first PIEGA loudspeaker to combine a ribbon tweeter with an integrated horn. It became available to order on 26 November 2025 at GBP 9,200 per pair, taking its place above the Premium 701 Gen2 and Premium 301 Gen2, and below the Coax line in the catalogue.
Key specs that matter
This is a 3-way floorstanding design. The treble is handled by one RM 01-24 ribbon tweeter with horn, the midrange by one 140 mm FSD-M driver and the bass by four 140 mm FSD-W woofers. PIEGA gives a frequency range of 32 Hz to 50 kHz, a sensitivity of 90 dB at 1 W and 1 m, a nominal impedance of 4 ohm and a recommended amplifier output of 50 to 250 W. The cabinet is 116 cm high, 21 cm wide and 31 cm deep, with a round stand of 35 cm diameter, and each speaker weighs 39.6 kg.
Engineering and use context
The newly developed SSD (Super Symmetric Drive) ribbon has a foil moving mass of only 0.03 grams. Its horn attachment almost doubles the efficiency of the tweeter and lowers the crossover frequency to around 2.7 kHz, a first for this PIEGA range. The horn also narrows the dispersion toward floor and ceiling and moves the acoustic centre of the high frequencies almost level with the midrange driver. Its shape was refined over numerous prototypes in a special acoustically optimised material. The FSD (Full Symmetric Drive) midrange works in a sealed chamber, while the four woofers use the same FSD principle in a reflex configuration and reach roughly 6.5 dB higher maximum SPL than those of the Premium 701 Gen2. The housing is an extruded aluminium profile formed under more than 5,000 tonnes of pressure, with longitudinal bracing, a damping layer and a wooden reinforcement matrix inside. Finishes are sandblasted silver anodised aluminium, sandblasted black anodised aluminium and white lacquer in RAL 9016, each with a matching fabric cover. Three base options exist - the round base, an optional LTD bottom plate with height-adjustable spikes, and furniture gliders for positions near a wall.
Pairing
PIEGA Multi Connectors II provide bi-wiring terminals, so the treble and bass sections can take individual cables or two amplifier channels each. With the low nominal impedance, the partner amplifier needs to handle a low load without strain.
Alternatives
In the same Gen2 range PIEGA also makes the Premium 701 Gen2, a 3-way floorstander with a dedicated midrange driver and two bass drivers.
