The Passif 50 is an anniversary edition speaker from PSB, released to mark the company's 50 years, and designed by founder Paul Barton. Pre-orders opened on 1 August 2022, with shipping from September 2022. Its styling draws on the Passif I and Passif II models and combines them with current acoustic refinements. The first Passif appeared in 1972, the founding year, and the Passif II followed in 1974. Production is a limited run. PSB lists it as a tower speaker, and it is supplied with dedicated stands that raise the cabinet to floorstanding height. The speakers are sold in mirror-imaged pairs because the tweeter is mounted off centre.

Key specs that matter

Frequency response on axis is 50 to 20,000 Hz within 3 dB, with the -10 dB point at 30 Hz. An anechoic sensitivity of 87 dB becomes 89 dB in a typical room, while the load is 6 ohm nominal with 4 ohm at minimum. The recommended amplifier power is 30 to 200 W, and program power handling is 200 W. The crossover point is 1,800 Hz. The cabinet is 660 mm high without stands and 864 mm with them, 279 mm wide and 254 mm deep, and each speaker weighs 13.7 kg.

Engineering and use context

The two-way layout uses a 1 inch dome tweeter with ferrofluid damping and a neodymium magnet, set in a felt surround that reduces edge diffraction. The 6.5 inch woofer uses a paper cone and a cast aluminium frame, and bass is reinforced by a front-firing 8 inch passive radiator rather than a port, with its basket also cast in aluminium for rigidity. Both use filleted rubber surrounds. Filtering between the drivers uses a Linkwitz-Riley network of fourth order. The heavily braced enclosure is assembled with mitred joints and finished in open-grain walnut veneer with bevelled front framing, and the woven cloth grilles attach magnetically. A rear plaque bears a Canadian maple leaf and the anniversary dates, the grille pull tab carries an embroidered original PSB logo, and the first 500 units shipped with a handwritten letter from Paul Barton. The supplied stands come in three pieces, assemble with four Allen bolts per side using an included key, and accept either spikes or threaded domed rubber pads depending on the floor.

Gold-plated five-way terminals are doubled, letting the low and high sections take bi-wiring or separate amplifier channels.
