The Gro is a slim passive two-way floorstander from SV-Audio, a Danish company based on the island of Bornholm that develops and builds its own speakers. The maker positions it above the Frida, developing it for greater scale and deeper bass extension than that model while keeping a slim cabinet. In the SV-Audio range it sits alongside the Astrid and Fenja.
Key specs that matter
Two 5-inch mid-woofers with woven, self-reinforced polypropylene cones work with a 38 mm (1.5-inch) silk dome ring radiator tweeter powered by a neodymium motor. Published frequency response is 27 Hz to 38 kHz, sensitivity is 90 dB and the nominal average impedance is 4 ohm. The recommended amplifier power is 25 to 250 W. The cabinet measures about 21 cm wide, 100 cm high and 32 cm deep, with a weight near 22 kg per unit.
Engineering and use context
SV-Audio builds the Gro around time and phase alignment between the tweeter and the two mid-woofers. The crossover is assembled from low-resistance components refined through listening and measurement, and inside runs hybrid wire combining plain copper with silver-plated copper. The narrow front suits living rooms where a wide tower would dominate, and SV-Audio lists spaces as large as 60 m2 as suitable. SV-Audio asks for rear wall clearance of at least 30 cm and preferably 60 cm. Satin gloss Pure Black comes with a choice of Matte Black or Bentley Copper baffle, and the high gloss list includes Black Pearl, Creme White, Deep Pearl Blue and Reference Pearl Gray. A tiger bamboo version also exists, and two- and three-layer car paint codes can be ordered on request.
Pairing
Such a low nominal impedance needs a partner amplifier that is stable and able to supply current, so a transistor integrated specified firmly into low loads is the natural match. Given the sensitivity, a unit well inside the suggested window covers ordinary listening levels in 20 m2, and there is no need to go near the upper power limit. Low-output single-ended valve designs are less suited because of the lower impedance, while push-pull valve amplifiers with a 4 ohm tap remain an option.
Alternatives
For more cabinet and driver area, the SV-Audio Astrid is a larger two-way line source floorstander from the same company, with four mid-woofers and a gentler load.
