The Ergo 690 DC is the larger of the two floorstanding models in Canton's Ergo series, a long-running German line known for real wood veneers with rounded solid corners and perforated aluminium grilles. It is designed for larger rooms, and together with the smaller Ergo 670 DC, the Ergo 620 compact speaker and the SUB 650 subwoofer, it can be built into a complete home cinema system. Like all Canton speakers, it is manufactured at the company's factory in Weilrod in Germany's Taunus region.

Key specs that matter

Its three-way bass reflex layout pairs a 25mm aluminium-manganese dome tweeter, a 174mm aluminium-cone midrange and two 192mm aluminium-cone woofers. Frequency response extends from 20Hz to 40kHz, nominal impedance is 4 to 8 ohms and power handling is 170W nominal and 320W music power. Each speaker measures 23 x 105 x 30.5cm and weighs 24kg. Finishes are Cherry, Wenge and Ash real wood veneer, and Canton covers the speaker with a five-year warranty.

Engineering and use context

DC stands for Displacement Control, Canton's filtering technology that removes infrasonic signals below the audible range before they reach the woofers. Such signals, from record warps or recording artefacts, cannot be reproduced usefully but still drive the cones into large excursions and create distortion in the audible bass. The tweeter's dome and voice coil former are made as a single piece, which damps high-frequency resonances and improves heat dissipation. The woofers use Canton's patented triple-folded wave surround, allowing long excursion while keeping the cone movement linear, and the midrange sits at the top of the baffle in its own separate enclosure volume so the woofers' back pressure does not modulate it. Multiple internal bracing, targeted cabinet damping and selected crossover parts complete the construction, and each speaker is finished by hand. The front-firing bass reflex port lets the speakers stand close to a wall without the port being blocked.

Pairing

The moderate load and generous power handling suit solid-state integrated amplifiers and AV receivers with good current delivery in medium to large rooms. Gold-plated bi-wire terminals allow the woofers to be wired or amplified separately from the midrange and tweeter. In a home cinema, the Ergo 690 DC works as the front pair with the Ergo 620 for surrounds and the SUB 650 subwoofer.
