The Ergo GS Edition is a limited run passive floorstanding loudspeaker that Canton introduced in November 2022 to mark the company's 50th anniversary. It is a reissue of Canton's first floorstanding model from 1979, and the letters GS honour the founder, Guenther Seitz. The suggested price was about EUR 7,000 per pair, and two real wood finishes were offered - Satin Oak Black and Satin Oak Natural. Production was strictly limited, and each speaker is built around a real wood enclosure rather than foil or decor.

Key specs that matter

The Ergo GS Edition is a vented three-way design. Two 220 mm woofers cover the band from 20 Hz up to 200 Hz, a 154 mm midrange driver takes over from there to 3,000 Hz, and a 25 mm dome tweeter handles everything above, extending to 40,000 Hz. Both woofers and the midrange use ceramic-tungsten membranes with wave surrounds, while the tweeter uses a dome of aluminium oxide ceramic. Power handling is rated at 180 watts nominal and 340 watts music load, and the nominal impedance is 4 ohms. The cabinet is 300 mm wide and 300 mm deep, growing to 400 mm in both directions with its plinth fitted, and 1,030 mm tall. Each speaker weighs 34 kg.

Engineering and use context

Canton gives the midrange cone a triple curve, a shape intended to add stiffness to the membrane. Canton treats the cones with an improved electrolysing process, adds tungsten particles and gives them a special black colouring. Canton places the midrange and tweeter in a separate sealed chamber in the upper part of the enclosure, and that section is angled back, so the reflex loading applies only to the two bass drivers below. The cabinet itself is made of real wood and carries extensive internal bracing together with damping material. Bi-wiring terminals on the rear allow the bass section and the upper section to receive separate cable runs. Floor spikes are included in the box, as is a set of reference audio material supplied by Canton.

Pairing

With a nominal 4 ohm load and two large woofers to control, the Ergo GS Edition calls for a transistor amplifier rated for stable 4 ohm operation, with output in line with the nominal and music power ratings. The split terminals allow the woofer section and the mid-treble section to be wired independently, while a single integrated amplifier can be connected through the bridges in the usual way.

Alternatives

Canton's Ergo 670 DC is a smaller Ergo floorstander, a 2.5-way design with two 174 mm aluminium woofers in a 95 cm tall cabinet.
