The Ergo 670 DC is a passive floorstanding loudspeaker from Canton, built at the company's factory in Weilrod, Germany, and finished in real wood veneer combined with aluminium front panels. It belongs to the Ergo range and was offered in three wood finishes - Cherry, Wenge and Black Ash. The DC in its name stands for Displacement Control, a technology developed by Canton for its bass drivers.

Key specs that matter

Canton specifies a 2.5-way bass reflex system with four drivers counted as three units. Two 174 mm woofers with aluminium cones and wave surrounds handle the low and mid frequencies, and a 25 mm aluminium-manganese dome tweeter covers the top end. Canton states the crossover points as 300 Hz and 3,000 Hz. Canton lists 25 Hz as the lower limit and 40,000 Hz as the upper one. Power handling is rated at 110 watts nominal and 170 watts music load, with a nominal impedance of 4 to 8 ohms and an SPL of 87.5 dB at 1 watt and 1 metre. Each cabinet measures 21.5 cm wide, 95 cm high and 28.5 cm deep and weighs 17.5 kg.

Engineering and use context

In a 2.5-way layout the pair of cones shares the low frequencies, and just one keeps working up to the upper handover point, which lets a slim cabinet carry two cones of the same size. Displacement Control is Canton's circuit measure against uncontrolled excursion of the woofer membranes at very low frequencies, so the cones are protected from deflection below the range they are meant to reproduce. The reflex port fires forward, which Canton points to as a benefit for placement flexibility. Inside the enclosure the company specifies internal bracing and an optimised set of crossover components. Gold-plated screw terminals are fitted in pairs on the back panel, allowing bi-wiring with separate cable runs or bi-amping with separate amplifier channels.

Pairing

The impedance curve that reaches down to 4 ohms points to an amplifier that remains stable with 4 ohm loads, and the power handling window gives a guide to a sensible output range. Owners of two stereo amplifiers, or of a receiver with assignable channels, can use the doubled terminals for bi-amping, and a conventional stereo integrated amplifier can drive the pair through single cables with the bridges left in place.

Alternatives

Canton's Ergo GS Edition is a larger three-way floorstander in the Ergo family with two 220 mm woofers and a 154 mm midrange in a real wood cabinet.
