The Electron SE is the upgraded version of the Electron tower from Tekton Design, the loudspeaker maker founded by Eric Alexander in Orem, Utah. Listed among the Mid Towers at USD 3,140 per pair, down from USD 3,700, it retains the four-way design of the regular Electron and fits SE drivers together with better crossover parts and wiring from the factory.
Key specs that matter
Two high-output 8-inch Electron SE woofers, two 5-inch mid-bass drivers and a patented array of low-mass tweeters make up the driver set, with no tweeter count given. Frequency response is 30 Hz to 30 kHz, sensitivity is 96 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m, nominal impedance is 4 ohms and power handling is 300 W. Each cabinet measures about 1,219 x 257 x 349 mm and weighs about 38.6 kg. A beryllium upgrade is offered for the tweeters.
Engineering and use context
The SE parts list includes solid billet copper input terminals from Cardas, internal wiring to military specification, Mundorf or ClarityCap capacitors in the tweeter section and an oversized Jantzen or Erse Sledgehammer inductor in the woofer section. Against the standard Electron, the mid-bass drivers grow from 4 to 5 inches, sensitivity and power handling rise, and each speaker is about 10 kg heavier. The treble comes from a polygon-oriented group of small domes covered by US Patent 9247339, which divides the upper frequencies among several light diaphragms. The four-way arrangement gives the woofers, the mid-bass pair and the array their own frequency bands. Bi-amping or bi-wiring hardware adds USD 75, paint is available in many colours including high gloss with a longer lead time, and grilles are shipped in a separate box. Tekton builds the Electron SE in the USA. On other Tekton models such parts are sold as an optional upgrade package, but on the SE they are fitted as standard.
Pairing
The high sensitivity means that moderate amplifiers reach normal listening levels, while the power handling allows more powerful solid-state designs. The 4 ohm nominal impedance calls for an amplifier rated for such loads. The slim cabinet fits living rooms of about 20 m2, and the added weight makes solid flooring and footers useful for stability.
Alternatives
The Tekton Design Electron is the standard version, with two 8-inch woofers, two 4-inch mid-bass drivers, 95 dB sensitivity and 200 W handling at USD 2,200.
