The Encore Monitor is a large monitor loudspeaker from Tekton Design, essentially a scaled-down version of the company's tall Moab floorstander. It uses the same dual seven-driver arrays arranged in a D'Appolito layout, fitted into a cabinet about 88cm tall that sits on a low stand or directly on the floor. It was designed by Tekton founder Eric Alexander, whose patented array concept underpins the company's whole range.

Key specs that matter

The Encore Monitor uses two seven-dome midrange arrays arranged above and below a single 30mm tweeter, all dome drivers supplied by Wavecor, and bass reproduced by cone drivers in a vented enclosure. The speaker covers 40Hz to 30kHz, rates 94dB for sensitivity and presents a 4-ohm nominal load, and Tekton recommends amplifiers of no more than 120W. The cabinet measures 87.6 x 22.4 x 27.3cm and weighs 19.05kg.

Engineering and use context

In Tekton's double array speakers such as the Moab and Encore, all seven domes in each array work together as one midrange driver, and only the single tweeter between the two arrays covers the highest frequencies. Arranged this way, the two arrays and central tweeter form a midrange-tweeter-midrange (MTM) layout, which produces symmetrical vertical dispersion around the tweeter axis and reduces reflections from the floor and ceiling. Using many small fabric domes as a midrange gives the combined area of a larger driver with the low moving mass of tweeter diaphragms, allowing the arrays to cover a wide band below their normal tweeter range. Tekton mounts the domes flush and uses individual waveguides, which also sets their voice coils back to help time-align them with the cone drivers. The high sensitivity comes from the large combined radiating area of the arrays and the efficient drivers used throughout. The cabinet stays slim despite its height, and Tekton, which sells its speakers factory-direct from Utah, paints cabinets in a range of colours, custom shades included.

Pairing

The Encore Monitor produces high levels from low-power tube amplifiers and moderate solid-state designs, but the amplifier must handle a low-impedance load comfortably. Its bass extension serves most music in small to medium rooms, and its height means a short, rigid stand is enough to bring the tweeter to ear level.
