The D590 is a passive floorstanding speaker from Jamo sold as a 50th Anniversary Special Edition, which the Danish brand presents as a return of a classic Jamo design with modern updates. Jamo calls it an entry-level hi-fi model, with a listed price of USD 1,399 per pair in walnut. Each cabinet carries a sequentially numbered brushed aluminium anniversary plate on the back.
Key specs that matter
The ported three-way layout uses four drive units - one 200 mm long-stroke woofer, two 135 mm fiberglass midrange units and a 25.4 mm positive dome tweeter. Crossover points are 600 Hz and 2.5 kHz. Jamo gives a bandwidth of 35 Hz to 20 kHz within 3 dB and a low cut-off of 30 Hz at minus 6 dB. Sensitivity is 88 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m, and the nominal impedance is 4 ohm. Rated power is 200 W with a 280 W peak figure, and Jamo recommends an amplifier of more than 75 W. Each speaker is 1,051.5 mm high, 261 mm wide and 387 mm deep and weighs 23.9 kg.
Engineering and use context
The woofer fires downward into an integrated plinth built into the base, leaving the front baffle with only the two midrange cones and the tweeter. Handing the bass to the woofer lets the two midrange units work over a narrow band below the tweeter. The tweeter uses an Anti-Diffraction Waveguide and Decoupled Tweeter Technology, which isolates it mechanically from the baffle. The curved bass-reflex enclosure is covered in wood-grain veneer and topped with a high-gloss painted cap. A removable woven tweed grille attaches magnetically. Black Ash and Walnut finishes are listed, and two pairs of gold-plated screw terminals accept either bi-wired or bi-amplified connection.
Pairing
The low nominal impedance matters more than the sensitivity when choosing electronics - the chosen amplifier needs a rating for low impedance loads and power above the minimum power Jamo recommends. With two stereo power amplifiers, one can feed the woofer through the lower terminal pair while the other drives the midrange and tweeter. The deep bass extension means many stereo systems in a room of about 20 m2 can run without a subwoofer, and in a multichannel system the pair can act as left and right fronts driven by an AV receiver.
Alternatives
The Jamo C97 II is a three-way floorstanding option at 6 ohm, using twin 6 inch woofers and a 6 inch midrange in a 1,072 mm tall cabinet.
