Morel, based in Israel, makes the Avyra 633 as the tower of its Avyra series. It uses three drive units in a 2.5-way layout and was priced at about USD 2,000 per pair. Morel conceived the series to make its handmade driver technology affordable to more listeners, and the range also covers a stand-mount model, the three-driver Center C5, a subwoofer and wireless versions.

Two 160 mm woofers each combine a single-piece diaphragm, a dual-magnet motor and a 75 mm aluminium voice coil in the external voice coil layout Morel calls EVC. A 28 mm Acuflex handcrafted soft dome tweeter with an aluminium voice coil covers the top. Crossover points are 250 Hz and 2.2 kHz. Morel quotes 25 Hz to 20 kHz within plus 2 and minus 4 dB, a sensitivity of 89 dB and a nominal impedance of 4 ohm. Power handling is 200 W nominal and 1,000 W peak. Engineering and use context

With the 2.5-way arrangement the pair of woofers shares the lowest octaves, while just one of them carries on to the tweeter crossover and the lower crossover point rolls off the second woofer. That retains the radiating area of two drivers while using a single cone through the midrange. The external voice coil places the coil outside the magnet, which allows a large coil on a compact cone, and the double magnet adds flux around it. The cone and dust cap are formed as one piece from Morel's damped polymer composite, and Morel assembles each unit by hand in Israel around a vented high-flux motor with twin ferrite magnets. The enclosure is MDF with bass reflex loading and comes in black, white or wood finishes. Given its deep rated bass extension, many listeners can do without a separate subwoofer in stereo. The tower suits rooms of 20 m2 and more, and Morel supports home cinema use with the Center C5 and an Avyra subwoofer in the same range.

Pairing

The low nominal impedance needs an amplifier specified into low loads that delivers good current. With the fairly high sensitivity and generous nominal power handling, a solid stereo integrated amplifier or AV receiver will drive the pair comfortably, and the peak figure leaves headroom for short transients.
