Chario, based in Milan, lists the Aviator Cielo among the floorstanding speakers of its Aviator series, with solid wood side panels. Chario says the Cielo project drew on several scientific fields - electroacoustics as the basic research for designing components from measured behaviour and fundamental parameters, and psychoacoustics for understanding how human perception decodes reproduced sound. Alongside it the Aviator range includes the Ghibli and Nobile standmount models, the Amelia and Aria towers and the Balbo centre channel.

Key specs that matter

Chario specifies a floor-standing reversed vertical alignment, loaded at the bottom end by a vented NRS system. The tweeter is Chario's 38 mm T38 Waveguide unit, working with three Rohacell woofers driven by NeFeB motors. The crossover points are 200 Hz and 1,235 Hz with fourth-order slopes. The 92 dB SPL sensitivity figure refers to 2.83 Vrms at 1 m, derived with decorrelated pink noise under ITU-R BS 1116-1 room conditions, and output falls 3 dB at 40 Hz. Impedance is rated at 4 ohm, never below 3.6 ohm, with a phase swing limited to 36 degrees. Each speaker stands 1,095 mm tall and 415 mm wide and weighs 28 kg.

Engineering and use context

Solid walnut and HDF make up the enclosure. Chario states that design work, material selection, finishes and quality controls are all carried out in Italy within its own manufacturing facilities, and that the entire production process is done by hand. Every model in the range is given a dedicated cabinet that the company regards as an inseparable part of the acoustic project rather than a simple enclosure. The vented NRS load is a principle Chario uses to exploit the interaction between a woofer and a nearby rigid surface so that less energy is lost through backward radiation and the diaphragm needs less excursion for a given sound pressure level. According to Chario, the waveguide flange of the T38 tweeter and its crossover focus energy towards the listening point, and its large size permits a lower crossover to the next driver than a conventional tweeter. Chario states that its Rohacell membranes are thermoformed, its neodymium magnets are daisy assembled and its flanges and baskets are die-cast aluminium. The packed speaker ships in a box measuring 1,172 x 495 x 385 mm.

Pairing

For this model Chario suggests an amplifier with 180 W of maximum average output.

Alternatives

Chario's Aviator Amelia is another floorstanding model from this Aviator family.
