The Aviator Aria is a floor standing 5 way speaker made by Chario of Milan, Italy, one of three towers in the Aviator series, alongside the four way Amelia and Cielo. Its layout is called by Chario a Reversed Vertical Alignment, with the bass section placed in a separate lower cabinet.

A 38 mm T38 tweeter sits in a waveguide, a midrange and a 165 mm woofer use ROHACELL cones with Full Apex Poly Ring shaping and neodymium motors, and two 200 mm subwoofers use natural fibre cones, again on neodymium magnets. Crossover points fall at 150 to 200 Hz where the bass section hands over to the woofer and midrange, and at 1 to 1.5 kHz toward the tweeter. Sensitivity is 95 dB SPL at 1 m with 2.83 V, measured with decorrelated pink noise following ITU R BS 1116 1. The low end reaches 35 Hz at minus 3 dB. Nominal impedance is 4 ohm, with a minimum of 3.0 ohm at 174 Hz and a phase angle within 36 degrees from 20 Hz to 20 kHz.

Engineering and use context

The structure has two cabinets. The lower one holds the pair of subwoofers and uses down firing vented loading, so the port exits toward the floor rather than the front. The upper one carries the woofer, midrange and tweeter. Each enclosure has an inner skeleton of high density fibreboard wrapped in solid Italian walnut, and elastomeric decouplers separate parts of the structure to limit vibration transfer. Chario rates the amplifier requirement at up to 250 W into 4 ohm for normal use, and quotes 130 W into 4 ohm per channel when the speaker is bi amped. Chario grants five years of worldwide warranty on the Aria and says that spare parts stay available for 15 years after a model is discontinued.

Pairing

The impedance minimum sits in the region where the subwoofers hand over to the woofer, so a matching amplifier needs to remain stable at low load and deliver steady current there. A second stereo amplifier allows the bass cabinet and the upper section to run on separate channels, following the bi amping rating. Low frequency extension was specified with a C4 WETS reference alignment, and the high sensitivity means moderate power still reaches useful levels in a room of 20 m2 or more. The pair lists at USD 26,985 in the North American market.
