The ELAC Uni-Fi Reference UBR62 is a three-way passive stand-mount speaker in the Uni-Fi Reference series, which builds on the concentric driver concept of the Uni-Fi line. It is offered in satin white with oak sides or satin black with walnut sides. The series builds on the Uni-Fi 2.0 models.
Key specs that matter
Its coaxial driver nests a 1 inch soft dome in the middle of a 4 inch aluminium cone, while a 6.5 inch aluminium cone woofer covers the bass. Both drivers sit in cast chassis, which ELAC designed to minimise reflections back to the cone. The woofer uses a one-piece aluminium cone with compound curvature and a large rear-vented magnet, and the midrange has a large voice coil, a vented rear spider and a new neodymium magnet, while a wide surround extends the tweeter response. Crossover frequencies are 260 Hz and 1,800 Hz. ELAC specifies a response from 41 Hz to 35,000 Hz, a sensitivity of 85 dB and a nominal impedance of 6 ohm, with 140 W as the maximum power input. Each cabinet measures 208 x 359 x 334 mm and weighs 10.7 kg.
Engineering and use context
ELAC describes the three-way crossover as more complex, intended to join the three drivers smoothly across the two transition points. The cabinet is made from CARB2 rated MDF. Its front baffle is curved rather than flat. Inside, a new full perimeter brace joins the top and side panels, and ELAC states that it reduces cabinet vibration. Bass reflex loading works through dual flared slot ports, flared both inside and outside, which the company says lower port noise and raise bass output. The rear panel carries bi-wire 5-way binding posts, so the bass section and the concentric section accept independent wiring. The real wood side panels distinguish the Reference series from the vinyl finish of the standard Uni-Fi 2.0 models.
Pairing
The modest sensitivity suits an amplifier with generous output that still respects the maximum input rating, and the bi-wire terminals also permit bi-amping with two amplifier channels per speaker. ELAC states that the new woofer gives better linearity and deeper low-frequency response than any earlier Uni-Fi bookshelf speaker.
Alternatives
The ELAC Uni-Fi 2.0 UB52 is the smaller and simpler stand-mount relative, using a 5.25 inch aluminium woofer below the same size of concentric unit in a vinyl-wrapped cabinet.
