The Cambridge Audio SX60 belongs to the SX series as a two-way standmount design, positioned by the company as the larger sibling of the SX50 and intended for bigger spaces. Cambridge Audio announced the refreshed SX range in October 2020 with a new matte black finish and a new logo, and the SX60 was listed on the maker's own sites at GBP 249 in the UK and USD 329 in the US.

Key specs that matter

Driver complement consists of a 25 mm silk dome tweeter and a 165 mm treated paper cone woofer, joined by a precision-tuned two-way crossover. Its published response spans 41 Hz to 22 kHz and a sensitivity of 89 dB. Nominal impedance is 8 ohm, and amplifiers rated between 20 and 100 W are recommended. Each cabinet stands 340 mm high, 200 mm wide and 272 mm deep, and weighs 5.0 kg.

Engineering and use context

That treated silk tweeter was new for the 2020 refresh of the series, and the woofer magnet systems were optimised at the same time. Its enclosure is built from rigid MDF, and its shape was worked out with computer-aided modelling to reduce resonance and standing waves within the box. The bass reflex port faces forward, which sets the SX60 apart from the rear-ported SX50, and foam bungs supplied in the box can be inserted into the port to lower bass output. According to the maker, the crossover tuning is set to keep the two drivers in phase with each other. A single pair of gold-plated binding posts takes either banana plugs or thick bare cable, and the removable fabric grilles can stay on to protect the drivers. Cambridge Audio places it as the mid-sized design of the range, made to sit on stands or on a cabinet. The SX family also includes the SX-70 centre speaker, the SX-80 floorstander with two 16.5 cm mid/bass drivers in a D'Appolito layout and the SX-120 subwoofer with a 70 W RMS amplifier and an 8-inch long-throw driver.

Pairing

Cambridge Audio states that the SX speakers are designed to work particularly well with its AX Series hi-fi separates, which share the minimalist matt black styling. For a home cinema layout the SX60 can be combined with the SX-70 centre channel and the SX-120 subwoofer from the same range, turning a stereo pair into a surround system built from one family of cabinets.
