Cambridge Audio's L/R X heads the L/R family of powered stereo speakers, ranking above the L/R M and the L/R S, and it was presented at CES 2026. The London engineering team developed it, and Ged Martin drew the cabinet. Deliveries were set for summer 2026 at GBP 1,799, USD 2,299 and EUR 1,999 per pair in painted finishes, with Real Walnut veneer costing GBP 1,899, USD 2,399 and EUR 2,099. The pair takes over the jobs of a network player, an integrated amplifier and a phono preamplifier.

Key specs that matter

Mounted in every enclosure are a 28 mm Torus tweeter using an aluminium dome of dual-radius profile, two 5 inch long-throw woofers - one aimed forward and one angled downward from the base - and a pair of 6 inch passive radiators on the flanks, tuned to 38 Hz and hidden behind machined covers in the body colour. Class D power of 400 W per cabinet works out at roughly 135 W for each driver and 800 W per system, which Cambridge describes as 1 horsepower. The rated bandwidth is 35 Hz to 24 kHz within 3 dB. Every unit is 200 mm wide, 330 mm tall and 260 mm deep, and both primary and secondary weigh 10.4 kg.

Engineering and use context

Digital filtering is done by 64-bit DSP ahead of the amplifier stages, and DynamEQ shifts bass and treble balance as the volume changes so quiet listening keeps its low end. The app adds a seven-band parametric equaliser alongside preset tunings. Because the side radiators push against each other, the reaction forces on the box mostly cancel, holding cabinet movement down even at high excursion. The floating base leaves an air gap for the downward woofer and houses LED lighting whose brightness and colour temperature are adjustable. Left and right can be joined by the included 5 m USB-C Speaker Link cable or wirelessly through WiSA HT, both carrying 24-bit and 96 kHz audio, so the secondary cabinet needs only a mains lead when the radio link is used. StreamMagic Gen 4 covers TIDAL Connect and Spotify Connect, Qobuz Connect, Deezer, Amazon Music, internet radio, UPnP and Roon Ready operation, with AirPlay 2 and Google Cast for multiroom. Wi-Fi 5 on both bands and wired Ethernet are provided, and Bluetooth handles SBC and AAC.

Pairing

The primary cabinet hosts all sockets - HDMI eARC accepting PCM stereo up to 24 bit and 192 kHz, a moving-magnet phono preamp, USB-C audio, a USB-A port for storage devices, Toslink optical, an RCA line input, Ethernet and an RCA feed for a subwoofer. A Bluetooth LE remote comes in the box.

A step down in the L/R range sits the Cambridge Audio L/R M, fitted with 4 inch woofers, 4.75 inch passive radiators and 150 W per speaker.
