Dynaudio of Denmark describes the Sub 3 as its compact active subwoofer, and within the home subwoofer line it sits below the Sub 6 in size, driver count and amplifier power. The company pitches it as a partner for any stereo or multichannel system, including setups built around its Contour-level speakers, and it combines one woofer, a closed box and a class D amplifier in a cabinet under 28 cm tall.
Key specs that matter
The unit uses a newly designed 23 cm woofer with an MSP cone, the magnesium silicate polymer compound Dynaudio uses for its low mass and high stiffness. Power comes from a 300 W amplifier working in class D. Rated response runs from 22 Hz to 175 Hz within 3 dB either way, measured at 85 dB. The low-pass filter sweeps from 50 Hz to 150 Hz, phase switches between 0 and 180 degrees, and a high-pass filter for the main speakers offers flat, 60 Hz and 80 Hz positions. Inputs are one RCA LFE socket and a stereo RCA pair; outputs are a stereo RCA pair for satellites and one RCA slave socket. The box measures 266 mm wide, 276 mm high and 320 mm deep, growing to 336 mm deep with feet and grille fitted, and weighs 10.5 kg. Finishes are black satin and white satin, both with a black grille.
Engineering and use context
A sealed enclosure was chosen instead of a port, so there is no vent opening on any panel and the woofer works against the air trapped inside the box. The front baffle is a curved panel of double thickness, 37 mm deep, a construction the company borrowed from its Contour series to damp panel vibration in such a small box. The satellite outputs let a stereo amplifier without a dedicated subwoofer socket feed the Sub 3 first, with its high-pass filter then removing deep bass from the signal passed on to the main speakers, which relieves both the amplifier and the smaller woofers of the main pair. The slave output allows a second unit to be daisy-chained from the first. An auto on and off function switches the amplifier from standby by itself, maximum draw is 350 W and standby consumption is 0.5 W.
Pairing
With the LFE input the Sub 3 takes the subwoofer channel of a surround receiver or processor, and the stereo line input suits integrated amplifiers and streamers with pre-outs. Compact standmount and active speakers that stop short of the lowest octave are the obvious partners, since the high-pass settings take the lowest bass away from them.
Alternatives
The Dynaudio Sub 6 is the larger sealed model, using two opposed 24 cm woofers, a 500 W amplifier and a rated low limit of 16 Hz.
