The S1000W is the network-connected member of Edifier's S-series of powered two-way speakers, adding Wi-Fi streaming to the wired and Bluetooth inputs used elsewhere in the line. The pair is sold with its amplification, digital processing and streaming hardware built in, and it holds Hi-Res Audio certification for signals up to 24-bit/192 kHz.
Key specs that matter
Class-D amplification delivers 35 W x 2 for the mid/bass drivers and 25 W x 2 for the tweeters, 120 W RMS in total. Each cabinet uses a 5.5 inch aluminium mid/bass unit and a 1 inch titanium dome tweeter. The quoted frequency range is 45 Hz to 40 kHz, the S/N figure is 90 dB(A) or better, and residual noise is no higher than 25 dB(A). Connections cover Wi-Fi, AirPlay 2, Bluetooth 5.2, optical, coaxial and two RCA line inputs. Sensitivity is 700 mV on Line In 1, 900 mV on Line In 2, 450 mV for the two digital inputs and 500 mV over Bluetooth, each plus or minus 50 mV. One speaker measures 193 x 345 x 295 mm, and Edifier lists a net weight of 16.77 kg.
Engineering and use context
The two drivers in every box receive their own amplifier channels, because the crossover is done electronically in a DSP ahead of the power stage rather than with passive parts after it. The same DSP also applies dynamic control to the output. Edifier chose titanium for the tweeter dome on the grounds that it gives better sensitivity and wider dispersion than plastic domes. The cabinets are angled, and the maker states that their construction is intended to reduce resonance. Streaming services are reached directly over the home network - the S1000W supports Apple AirPlay, Amazon Alexa, TIDAL Connect and Spotify Connect, and several rooms can play in sync with other compatible devices. Wi-Fi setup runs through the Edifier Home app. A remote control switches inputs and sets volume, bass and treble. Supplied cables are a 3.5 mm to RCA lead, an RCA to RCA lead and an optical fibre cable.
Pairing
A TV can connect through the optical input, and a CD transport or streamer with a coaxial output can use the second digital socket. Two analogue sources, for instance a record deck with its own phono stage and a computer via the supplied mini-jack lead, can occupy the RCA pairs at the same time. Phone owners on iOS can use AirPlay 2, while Android users have Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect or Bluetooth. No separate amplifier, receiver or DAC is required, since conversion and amplification both happen inside the powered speaker.
Alternatives
The Edifier S2000MKIII is a bookshelf sibling without Wi-Fi that uses planar diaphragm tweeters and 50 W per channel for its aluminium mid-bass drivers.
