The QR65 is an active desktop speaker pair from Edifier, released around April 2024 at USD 499.99 in black or white. Besides a two-way driver layout with Class D amplification for each driver, it builds a 65 W GaN charger into the active speaker, so laptops and phones can be charged from the same unit that plays their audio. Programmable lighting is also part of the design, and the whole unit is aimed at a desk where computer, phone and speakers share one power source.

Key specs that matter

A 1.25-inch (32 mm) silk dome tweeter and a 2.75-inch (70 mm) long-throw aluminium mid and bass driver are fitted in each speaker, in MDF cabinets with separate acoustic cavities. Two Texas Instruments Class D amplifiers deliver 70 W RMS in all, split as 15 W per tweeter and 20 W per mid and bass unit. The response extends from 55 Hz to 40 kHz, and noise is at least 85 dB below the signal, A-weighted. Bluetooth 5.3 supports LDAC, and wired inputs are USB and RCA, with a subwoofer output. The active speaker measures 141.5 x 213 x 216.8 mm and the passive one 130 x 213 x 212 mm, and the pair weighs 5.3 kg.

Engineering and use context

The charger uses gallium nitride, or GaN, power transistors, which switch efficiently and allow the charger to fit in a small space. It provides two USB-C ports and one USB-A port, with the USB-A port limited to 60 W. Separate acoustic cavities inside the MDF cabinet keep the tweeter and mid and bass driver from sharing the same air volume. The tweeter is larger than the usual 25 mm dome, and the long-throw cone gives bass from a small cabinet. Edifier calls the lighting system TempoAbyss, with 11 presets selected by a side button or through Edifier's ConneX smartphone app. The subwoofer output lets a separate sub, such as one of Edifier's own, extend the bass further. LDAC allows high-resolution Bluetooth from compatible Android phones.

Pairing

On a desk, the QR65 connects to a computer over USB and charges a laptop from its USB-C ports at the same time. Analogue sources, from a TV to a record player with a built-in phono preamp, use the RCA input. Adding an Edifier subwoofer such as the T5 fills in the bass for games and films.
