The Lumina II is the bigger stand-mount model in Sonus faber's Lumina collection, the entry range of the Italian company. The collection launched on 8 September 2020, and the Lumina II followed in 2021 at USD 1,299 per pair. It sits above the Lumina I and below the Lumina III floorstander, and it is made in Arcugnano near Vicenza.
Key specs that matter
This two-way vented design uses a 29 mm DAD soft dome tweeter with a ferrite magnet and a 150 mm paper cone midwoofer, crossed over at 1,800 Hz. Frequency response is 55 Hz to 24 kHz, sensitivity is 86 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m, and nominal impedance is 4 ohms, and Sonus faber suggests 30 to 150 W of amplifier power. There are four binding posts for bi-wiring. Each speaker is 304 mm high, 180 mm wide and 263 mm deep and weighs 5.8 kg. A pair ships in a carton of 435 x 380 x 490 mm weighing 14 kg.
Engineering and use context
The tweeter is visco-elastically decoupled from the front baffle, so vibration from the midwoofer and cabinet is not passed directly to the dome. DAD refers to the company's Damped Apex Dome, in which the centre of the dome is treated to avoid the out-of-phase movement that can occur at the apex. The baffle is built from multilayer wood with a veneer, while the sides and top are covered by hand in black leather, and a rubber pad beneath the cabinet decouples it from its support. Three finishes are offered - Piano Black, Wenge with maple inlays, and Walnut with maple inlays. A port extends the bass of the midwoofer from the compact box. The low crossover point keeps the paper cone working mostly in the lower midrange and bass. The same DAD tweeter appears in the Lumina III and Lumina V floorstanders, and the paper midwoofer matches the midrange driver size of the Lumina III, so the models share a common driver family.
Pairing
The Lumina II suits integrated amplifiers of the suggested power that cope well with low-impedance speakers. Stands that place the tweeter near ear height fit the compact cabinet, and the port should be kept away from a wall. A Gravis subwoofer can extend the low end. The bi-wire terminals accept two cable pairs if desired.
Alternatives
The Sonus faber Lumina I is a more compact stand-mount in the same collection.
